As with most of Gord's lyrics and rants, it's hard to discern fact from poetic license as he intertwines them so seamlessly. Tom Thomson was a renowned Canadian artist who died during a canoe trip in 1917. "Officially", he drowned, but the cause of death is hotly debated. Some say murder, some say suicide, some say drowning.
What's
not disputed is the beauty and significance of his art.
The infamous Landsowne Park boot ffrom July 26, 1993 has some incredible rants, and in Three Pistols Gord goes into great detail about the "circumstances" of Thomson's death. The whole show is a great listen and highly recommended. Other references to Thomson's work can be heard in many of Gord's rants & improvs throughout the years.
For a little background information and to view a pretty large gallery of Tom Thomson's work, go

The Landsdowne Park boot has been in circulation for a long time, but with the advent of BitTorrent there may be another generation of listeners who don't have it. If there's enough interest, I'll put it up on the hipfans.com tracker.
