So I was at a local pub the other night, and there was a guy with a guitar on stage, playing neil young and what not. He was taking requests and I asked him if he knew any hip. He asked me if I want normal Hip or obscure Hip. I, obviously, replied "The more obscure the better".
He started out with Thompson Girl. He must have seen that I loved it cause he moved on to Don't Wake Daddy. And finally Emperor Penguin.
NEedless to say I was very impressed.

I'm not tooting my own horn here but I have done the acoustic solo thing for a couple years here in the Detroit area. Being an avid Hip fan I try to slip in a tune or two every now and then. It's great when someone recognizes one of the songs! I don't dig into the real obcure but now and then I do pull out Wheat Kings or Grace too.

How do you do these songs solo?
I can do Wheat Kings, but Don't Wake Daddy or Grace Too seem impossible.

I don't know if TTH do it in an open tuning, but I seem to remember having the most success playing Grace open....

There was a guy in saratoga that started playing a hip song (don't remember which one) That's rare for out there. I was impressed.
Also, I was at Daniel Jacks in downtown Syracuse once, and two guys with guitars were there. They kept trying to get everyone to yell out some songs to play. Of course there was that jackass alternating yelling free bird and 50 cent. Finially I couldn't keep my mouth shut so I yelled out, "HIP." They said, "who?" So I yelled "TRAGICALLY HIP." The guy said, "oh finially, some real music." They they started playing ahead by a century. You could tell that they had practiced it before. They were actually pretty good. I think me and one of my friends were the only people who knew the song, and he sounded nothing like the band, but WTF, it was cool.

I developed a killer version of Grace about a year ago (about the same time I became bandless). I do use an odd tuning. If you want specifics I would be happy to tell ya. Maybe someday I'll do a home recording of it and post an mp3 or something. Even if I play a show that I don't really expect the audience to know who the hip are, the song goes over well.
