I know he wrote one of my favourite songs "Sister Morphine" either exlusively for, or later covered by, (I'm not sure which) The Rolling Stones, but can somebody who knows the man a little better suggest a seminole recording or must have CD?

I only have one of his recordings: "Get Rhythm". Although I'm not a Ry Cooder expert, I would probably say that this is not his seminole recording, although it is quite a lot of fun and very eclectic. The cover of Johnny Cash's "Get Rhythm" is great, and there's a catchy little cover of Elvis' "All Shook Up" as well. Apparently, "Paradise and Lunch" and "Chicken Skin Music" are supposed to be two of his best albums.
He's also very well know for instrumental soundtracks for several movies (Southern Comfort, Goin' South, Paris Texas, Streets of Fire, Alamo Bay, Blue City, Crossroads, Cocktail, Johnny Handsome, Steel Magnolias, Geronimo).
He's also made some very interesting "world" music, including a grammy winning performance with Ali Farka Toure on the album "Talking Timbuktu".

He's also famous for the work he did with the Buena Vista Social Club, a bunch of geriatric Cuban singers who make GREAT music :thumb:

My favourite recording with Ry Cooder is from the movie Crossroads (with Ralph Macchio himself). It's the head cutting duel played by Steve Vai and Cooder. Guitar playing at its finest.

Do yourself a favour, and pick up 1974's Paradise And Lunch. Amazing. Also, last year he made an album with Manuel Galban called Mambo Sinuendo. Incredible drumming by Jim Keltner on that one.
See if you can get a copy of his "Blue Suede Shoes". Brilliant.
