Ok, so I'm getting married in Milwaukee on September 1st and we are having our honeymoon on Mackinac Island, MI. Since we are driving back to our home base in Vermont, my question to you savy Hipbase members is this: Is it better to go through Sault Ste Marie or cross via Detroit/Windsor? What I'm worried about are road conditions further north in the Sudbury area and gas/pitstop areas in that area. Thanks for any advice you can give :jump :jump

I will always be more partial to the Northern parts of Ontario. In my opinion, driving through Northern Ontario is much more relaxing and beautiful than driving through the South.

If you've got a choice, I'd suggest picking the Sault crossing.

Ahmm, that's what I figured and what I was hoping for, but are there hotels and such to stop overnight? I figure it's going to take us a day and a half to drive back to Vermont and I don't want to be stuck out in the middle of Ontario wilderness with no place to sleep overnight :lol: :lol:

The Sault to Subdury takes roughly three hours by car. You'll have a good choice of hotels in each location.
There will also be places to stop along the way if you decide you need a break sooner.

I'm envious that you'll be travelling through Ontario in September. It is beautiful in the fall.

North Ontario is the way to go BUT I do a lot of travelling and I have to tell you, Ontario is like Ohio when it comes to amenities. Other than the scenery in Ontario there is nowhere near the amount of highway hotels or stuff like in the states. The food will leave a lot to be desired too, there are not really a lot of mom and pop restraunts like even 10 years ago, its all becomings McDs or Wendys and Tim Hortons and Mr Sub. Other than that Congrats on your upcoming marriage, take a great camera as Northern Ontario is gonna have you pulling over constantly to take pictures.

Oh yea I forgot, I live in Cambridge Ontario and im only 5 mins from the highway 401 that comes from Toronto to Windsor and go that way when I go down to Kentucky and Tennesse, that part of Ontario might be some nice farm land but is only 1% of the beauty that Northern Ontario has. Id go North for sure.

I'd go Sault. Take 17 all the way to Ottawa. That would be a great drive, and I'd imagine it's a couple hundred kilometres shorter than the route through Sarnia/Detroit.

In September you won't have any weather concerns, and if you plan your stops accordingly - Day one drive to North Bay. Day two is North Bay to Vermont - you'll be fine for food and accommodations.

Thanks guys I appreciate the advice! I'm gonna go the Sault route. I was thinking the same thing in terms of stopping for the night as well. Will definitely take the camera, never been near Algonquin at all.

If you're not pressed for time I would suggest going a little out of the way.. Rather than taking the 17, I'd continue down the hwy 11 from Nothbay all the way to Hunstville, and take 60 accross to Ottawa. 60 goes directly through Algonquin park. I guarantee you won't be sorry you took the detour.

I 2nd that suggestion. I have done that drive a couple times, you will shit your pants at how nice it is, and you WILL see moose. At least I have every time I went thru Algonquin.
They hang out at the side of the road and you can take pictures, but dont get out and get close, they do charge in anger or fear. Plus if you go thru there at night, dont speed as if you hit one of them your dead it will crush you to death.
