I have the first generation CD that sourced the copperpenny release.
Davis Manning himself made the CD from his own personal cassette that was recorded November 9th 1985.

I do recall that it was one hell of a night. It seems to me, The Copper Penny was a long ranch-styled place with a parking lot in the front. it had a dark, warm, calm foyer with a pulpit-type register, a small lamp, with the service to the right and the dining area to the left. At the far side of the dining area was an elevated wood-paneled, wood-railed, pleasantly seductive bar where the bulk of the Hipstrum hung. The small, low-ceilinged stage was to the immediate left, lifted about a foot from the ground with a few flood lights, and some typical bar-band-type equipment.

In the middle of the room, a friend was situated with his new-fangled cassette-4-track-sound-recording rif with a single microphone hanging from the ceiling about 20 feet out from the stage.

The dressing room was at the far end of the bar, stage-left, the furthest room away from the stage.

This all happened because the owner of The Copper Penny Restaurant made sure that on that night at least, the place would be packed. And I mean they did just that. i will take a wild guess and say there were at least 350 people in a 150 person capacity club, and every last one of them were there to make sure The Hip had a good night. And I mean they did just that.

I wish I remembered his name, the friend with the tape recorder. I do remember his tall, dark, lanky, peaceful, kind demeanor. We were all so excited that he had offered to come and record our first demo. the plan was to submit the tape to a Toronto radio station contest, and to hear for the first time what the band really sounded like.

I can say from here now, the band sounded a lot better that this recording does. That night sounded a lot better...
