Is it just me or does The Hip's early stuff seem to relate alot to ship and their wrecks/stories??? (nautical disaster, dire wolf, titanic terrarium.....you name it)

Not to mention Gord's apparent fear of being trapped somewhere in the water and needing to swim (NOIS, live versions of Poets).

Actually, just finished listening closely through the lyrics of the Drowning Machine... his fear of open water is still quite strong (even if it's just metaphor)!

Also from Grand Bounce, Moon Over Glenora and Broadcast both have ship references and Yellow Days has his classic "swim" lyric.

In the rants as well ... e.g. "swim to me not to him" from Poets. References to water are all over the place, Dire Wolf, YNTO, Born in the Water, Lake Fever, etc ... Coincidentally, we were on the Toronto Island ferry last night for the Arcade Fire show and realized it was perhaps the same vessel from The Last Recluse video. We discussed this very topic and how water is such a prevalent theme in the lyrics of Hip songs, and a great metaphorical gateway for life in general. The way it brings people together and\or apart IMO fits right into Gord's lyrical sweetspot.
