The fifth World Water Forum is going on this week in Istanbul, Turkey. And as part of our on-going series Watershed we're going to spend the whole program looking at global water issues.

We'll get the latest from the meetings in Istanbul and talk to a critic who fears the forum is turning into a trade show for water privatization.

And we'll talk to Gord Downie, the lead singer of the Tragically Hip, about the changes to the Navigable Waters Protection Act that were slipped into the last federal budget and why he fears they will adversely affect the health of Canada's rivers.

Hopefully it will included Gord's interview. It seemed quite good, but I missed much of it because my boss was in my office. I suddenly realized who was talking after he'd left, because I heard Gord mention "the band's studio, near Bath".

And named Gord in the acknowledgments to Through Black Spruce.

Which is a pretty good novel, by the way. I went on a Boyden binge last week and read that one, Three Day Road and Born with a Tooth. He's definitely worth checking out if you like that kind of thing. Through Black Spruce is the best of the three -- must be Gord's influence. ;-)

Joseph Boyden is a fantastic author. "Three Day Road" is stunning, as is "Through Black Spruce". Make sure to read Three Day Road before Through Black Spruce though.
