Really?? I think it sounds like the opposite. There are WAY too many overdubs, vocal tracks, synthesizers, and layers upon layers of guitars on this record. The production & musician credits read more like a big budget Hollywood blockbuster than a rock album. Just a quick glance through the liner notes tells me that no less than 40 or 50 people worked on this thing in some capacity. To me it definitely has the sound of something that was slaved over and re-recorded again and again over a long period of time. I actually like the album, but there's just way too much going on for some of the songs to work. "Schackler's Revenge" is by far one of the worst things I've ever heard, while the two main ballads "This I Love" and "Street of Dreams" are cringe-inducing cheese fests. They're bad songs to begin with, but they might have sounded a little better with a more stripped down less-is-more approach. Unfortunately, Axl's ego is way too inflated for him to record them as anything other than bigger than life productions. "There's not enough going on here, people. I need layers! More layers!"
That being said, there are a handfull of songs on this record that I would call excellent: If the World is a really cool tune, as is Catcher in the Rye, Better, There Was a Time, Sorry, I.R.S., and the title track. Is it the greatest album ever, as the Axl Rose fanboys are proclaiming? That would be a big fat resounding NO. I could probably name at least 30 albums released in the last 10 or 15 years that easily wipe the floor with Chinese Democracy. Is it worth the 15 year wait? Not by a longshot. The fact that it took him this long to finish it is beyond ridiculous. But I'll give the guy credit. It isn't the complete trainwreck I expected it to be. It's actually a pretty solid rock album overall. Nothing more, nothing less.
