I just got back from his show last night in Portland, Maine.
Heed my warning and check the Elton John site carefully.
We were rocking out all the way down to Maine: Pinball Wizard, Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting, The Bitch Is Back etc.
The Kitchener and Sudbury shows are going to be the same as Portland...
Solo.
Now, I mean, the show was mediocre I guess, but we had expectations that we would be on our feet dancing and singing along.
2 and half hours of 'Candle In The Wind' and 'Can You Feel The Love Tonight' overtop of cheesy synthesized background music (straight from the 80s) was... definetly bizarre. And lets face it... when you're playing solo, you need to be able to carry your voice. Age wise, he's getting up there, so no high notes. A ballad version of 'I'm Still Standing' with low vocal range just rubbed me the wrong way. And it was that way all night with many songs.
We paid $127 for our seats. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't pay $25.
Elton has some of the greatest rock songs in history. Philadelphia Freedom and Bennie & The Jets do not carry well solo.
I would go back to see him with a band. But I would not recommend this solo... even if you did know that going into it (unlike us losers).
Lots of people we're leaving after about 45 minutes. One of the most disappointing shows I've ever been to.
I hope I don't get crucified for this post.
