I am surprised by the lackluster response to The Tragically Hip covers of classic David Bowie tunes. It makes sense to me that they have a deep respect for Mr. Bowie. Does the average Hip fan like David Bowie?

I don't know if I'm an average hip fan. But I've liked David Bowie ever since I heard Diamond Dogs way back when. He was an innovator in the 70's. I remember people back then saying he was ahead of his time. I haven't kept up with what he's done recently though.
Have been recently stuck on Panic in Detroit.

Don't care for Bowie. Never got into him. The Hip overdid it with the Bowie covers.
