Fantasy Hockey - Hard Canadian - 01-22-2007

So what place is your team at for the all-star break. i'm tied for 2nd. so far this season i've been in the top 3 spots for the majority of the season. i was in first place for the longest time then fell to 7th (out of 10 teams) climbed back up to second and joggled around the first - third position. hopefully things get a little better for me for the second half of the season. maybe i'll make a couple more changes over the break. hows your team doing? chances are, you have one. fantasy sports is the thing of the future.

I didn't start off too well, and at one point was as low as 9th (out of 10) in my league. Made a couple roster changes along the way (including picking up Patrick Marleau for Simon Gagne which seemed to pay off pretty well), and lately have been riding Marty Broduer and Dany Heatley into 2nd place. The guy in first has been there all season, and at one point had a ridiculous lead, but I've been slowly chipping away at it and hopefully well get him in a few weeks!

I'm in 2 pools and 1 fantasy league. My first pool i joined, i was at work & couldn't make the draft so i just had my brother-in-law select my team for me. I'm currently in 3rd place in that pool.

The 2nd pool i joined i was able to make the draft & select my own team. I was very satisfied heading home that night with my picks, but i got off to a rough start. For starters, i have Todd Bertuzzi (all 7 games of him), and i made the HUGE mistake of taking Tim Connolly, completely forgetting about his concussion problems. And a few of my players, such as Henrik Zetterberg & Ilya Kovalchuk, weren't playing up to their potential. They are coming around though and i moved into 7th place this week, and 5/6/7/8 are only seperated by 6 or 7 points.

My yahoo fantasy team...i was near the basement up until Christmas, but starting moving up the last few weeks, and currently sit 2nd. This is my 5th year playing, and i won my league years 1-4, so i'll do everything to ensure my Belfast Beasts V win again Smile

And oh yeah, i'm also in The Guardian newspaper's pool, and i've been moving up steadily the past couple months. The standings were in the paper again a few days ago and i'm in 96th spot.

i made quit a few moves through out the season dropping players and picking up a few but i only made one trade and it was a blockbuster. i had thomas vokoun and he was really doing well for my team until he was placed on IR. he was there for at least a month right? well within the first week of him being on IR another team offered me eric staal for him so i had to make the trade. especially since i had 2 other great goalies and picked up a third off free agency, them being dominik hasek, marc-andre fleury and nikolai khabibulin. that move really helped me climb the standings and regain my top 3 posisiton.

I run a keeper pool that's pretty involved. We have 30 players per roster, 15 of which are active and 15 are on reserve. You can make 4 callups per month (after 4 is a $5 fine) and you can grab free agents at a cost of $10. You protect 20 players heading into the next season and then we re-draft for the other 10 roster spots. Draft order is reverse standings. And of course you can make trades, etc. Additionally, there is a salary cap so guys like Crosby and Ovechkin are ridiculously valuable because they rack up the points while getting paid peanuts (relative to bums like Yashin). There is a prize for winning the regular season, and a prize for winning the playoffs. The playoffs are pretty fun because we do head to head matchups in the 1st round, and then the playoff winner is the team with the most points among the remaining four teams (top 8 teams make the playoffs, last two teams don't - and they pay an additional fine for finishing bottom two).

Anyway, we've been doing this pool since 2002 and I've been lucky enough to win the regular season two years in a row, and I've got a 30 point lead right now. Last year I duped the guy with Ovechkin into a trade (for Brad Richards). I don't know what he was thinking - Richards was due for a big raise, and Ovechkin is dirt cheap this year and next. Since I knew Zubrus would be centering Ovechkin this season I picked him up late in the re-draft, and he's been a great value. I also grabbed Kopitar in the 4th round, and he's paid off nicely. On my reserve roster I've got Backstrom (prospect for the Caps who is supposedly the best Swedish prospect since Forsberg - I'm salivating at the thought of him centering Ovechkin next season). I've also had Spezza and Heatley for the last two seasons, and my two starting goalies are Lundqvist (disappointing this season, but at least dirt cheap) and Kipper (total stud).

The only place where I'm really weak is D. I had McCabe last season but dropped him this year because of his contract. Despite being a Leaf fan the only Leafs I have are Ian White and Raycroft. White's been on my reserve roster all season and Raycroft has only been in the active lineup for a short period of time, the bum.

Anyway, the pool is a ton of fun - I recommend anyone who is really into hockey pools to find a keeper pool with a salary cap - it gets you thinking a lot more strategically and forces you to do a lot of research on prospects, salaries, etc. Good times!

For my fantasy team, i started the season with Lundqvist & Theodore as my goaltenders, but was able to pick up both Ray Emery & Chris Mason as FA's, which have both paid huge dividends for me the last couple of months...and oh yeah, i dropped Theodore & nobody has picked him up lol.
