Why I Never Want to Hear New Orleans is Sinking Again - Escape@Hand - 01-16-2007

So is this total blasphemy? I'm totally sick of hearing this song live and I think it needs to be put to bed. It used to be a great live song because they would always jam it out, play other songs in the middle (such as on the Scared single version where they play Fire in the Hole and Nautical Disaster) and you got to hear glimpses of new songs. Now they just rip through it, and it's nothing special. Personally, I find it a really boring and overplayed song compared to their other stuff. They have so many great songs they could do live instead. I suppose they have to pander to their non-hardcore fans, but I have to say the two club gigs I saw in Calgary were they best shows I've ever seen, and NOIS wasn't played at either one.

yeah, I agree with you but at least they're doing a album lenght version instead of a 10 minute one, if they play it I would rather it be short.

I've seen them 20 times, I'm going to the Toronto show with the best seats I've ever had for a Hip show (except for front row general admission).
My friend is coming with me, he has never seen then and he's really excited so I'm sure he'll enjoy hearing New O.

These are the songs that I would be fine with if they did not play:
Courage
Fully
Springtime
Fireworks
Escape

but if they play Cordelia / 38 years / Fiddlers and 50MC then they can play the other ones!

If they play it, I'd rather it be long. That is, I'd rather they played it like they mean it, instead of just ripping through it.

This thread has been done before and while I don't think they'll pull it from the setlist, because they like to please the fans, I think its absence from the club shows and the lacklustre way they play it indicate that they're basically bored of doing it.

Yeah, well I'm pretty new to the forum and after seeing them Sunday and hearing NOIS again, I was just venting. I'm also curious to see how others feel about the tune. I guess I'm not the only one who would rather see other tunes in the set.

Coconut Cream would be sweet, and I can't get enough of Escape is at Hand, but that may be because I've only heard them play it once and it's my favourite tune.

I could say the same for Blow, but I know about "that moment" that Rob describes on the dvd, so I understand. But I'm kinda sick of nois also, I\d rather they bust out something else like Another Midnight, or maybe even Last American Exit.


and I could easily listen to Escape at every show :mrgreen:

Well, I can see how people would be bored of it. They do seem to just go through the motions of NOIS now. An acquaintance of mine (wouldn't go as far as to call him a friend) shows up on the Charlottetown DVD that Rory shot. I talked to him about the concert and he said it wasn't that good; they didn't even play NOIS. Now, this is probably how most casual fans think. The question is, how many casual fans are at a show and how many hardcores are at a show? If you believe in democracy, I guess if there were more casual fans at a show, then NOIS should be played. I'm pretty sure The Hip play NOIS because they love as much crowd noise as possible, and they feed of the energy of the crowd. Then again, The Hip hardly ever play PEI and omitted NOIS so I don't know what to believe.

As for "Coconut Cream" instead of NOIS? I'd rather NOIS. I'm also amazed at the hate for "Courage". I know it's been played a zillion times but it isn't THAT BAD IS IT? :lol:

I could live with either Blow or NOIS at each show, but both is pushing it. I am glad that they've started getting NOIS out of the way earlier at most shows, though, since I really don't need to hear it as a closer anymore. Insert more of the usual setlist grievances here.

I believe in democracy.

Art is not democratic. They get to play what they want to play.

Some artists take risks and refuse to play what people want to hear. Others pander to the "greatest hits" crowd.
