Critically, it wasn't well received...
But I absolutely love this album. Has anybody else heard it?
I think it is some of the most brilliant albums that I have come across lately!

I absolutely loved the previous record and was really looking forward to this release. I think it would have been better received had Matt and the boys made it clear that this wasn't a true album, but a concept project: a soundtrack to an indie film they made with Sam Roberts. Many of the tracks are simply film score, not rock album tracks at all. This has great moments of rock, like 850 Commando, Spoonful of Sugar and the title track, but it's way too heavy on background music of almost zero substance to someone not watching a film.
If you loved stuff like "Stand Down at Sundown" like I did, then this is a real shift in direction. I like some of it, but have to give it an overall thumbs down.

I really like the album (and have read some terrific reviews of it) but I think what I like most was the fact he had the guts to do it. It would have been so easy to keep on doing exactly what worked on the first El Torpedo record until the whole band died of boredom.
Actually, thinking about it and remembering mystery authors I've spoken to whose publishers got very shirty about the writers' wanting to move away from established series characters... kudos to his record company, too!
I must be a really over-invested Mays fan, though, because I certainly thought he did a good job of making it clear that Angels is a solo record, not an El Torpedo project. I might have just been looking for the message more, though.
I've been listening to the thing as a soundtrack and trying to imagine the story that goes with it. So I'm definitely looking forward to the live concept show I'm going to this weekend, to see what Matt comes up with.

I really really really enjoy it..i'll put it on while i'm doing shit around the house, and some tunes are great to have in the background, while others just need to be cranked up and blasted thru the speakers..a brilliant disc
