Interesting article that appeared here in the Ottawa Sun this morning. Seems as though the little ones will have to find a new place to play.

It's all Downie's fault.
I thought the article was going to read how the Hip showed up at an arena and wanted to play hockey, so they kicked some kids off the ice and played a pick-up game with the tour crew.

but let's just clear this up right now, as it's apparently it's a slow news day or something and the Hip have nothing to do with it and are caught up in the middle by association.
Here's the deal:

let's just reread that news story:
The Hip: reserved the dates on July 26 with the owners
Kids Hockey: booked the facility with the city on Oct. 17, but was told Dec. 4 it was no longer available.
So, somebody tell me why the Hip are being blamed for grabbing the arena two and a half months earlier (through the proper channels), and why would the city even accept the booking without checking with the owners FIRST and then, it appernetly took them almost two months to find out it was even available and to inform the tournament participants.
Then add some information not as widely reported . . .

Under the terms of its contract with the City of Victoria, arena developer R.G. Properties is obligated to provide 1,700 hours of community-use ice time each year. However, the company has the right to cancel those time slots to make room for concerts and other events as long as the city officials in charge of scheduling community ice time receive at least 30 days prior notice.
Janssen said minor hockey officials received word of the cancellation Dec. 4.
“They have obligated their contract, but I think there’s a gap in their vision statement as far as the benefit to the community,” he said.

Dave Dakers, R.G. Properties director of facilities, said the company was unaware the novice tournament had been cancelled, since it’s the city’s responsibility to deal with arena user groups.
“We have no involvement in that process. We don’t get any financial compensation for the public use,” he said. “We book the commercial ventures and all that time goes back to the city... so we would never have been aware of it.”
The city usually replaces community ice time that has been lost to moneymaking events at the arena, but Janssen said there’s no way the novice tourney can be re-booked.
“That was the only real window we had for it,” he said.
Dakers said community groups looking for greater certainty might be better off approaching other arenas.
“Minor hockey probably never should have booked that event,” he said. “The user groups have to understand, they should be booking these thing in other buildings where there’s an ability to move (scheduling) around.”
Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre houses the only sheet of ice within the City of Victoria. . . .

Memorial Centre spokesman Tom Billings said R.G. Properties did not know of the hockey association's plans when it reserved several days for the Hip to rehearse and set up for their shows on Jan. 7 and 8. But he said the company told the city Oct. 23 that the dates were off-limits.
Anyway, this is non story that's been made into something at the expense of the HIP.

Any half-assedly media literate reader can see what's going on.
The venue screwed up its booking procedures, and then had to honour the earliest booking.
Then the minor hockey people called the newspaper, and the newspaper took the "rock stars pick on harmless kids" angle and ran with it.
The people who should be shredded here are the owners of the venue, who apparently need to get their act together.

It's sad that a non story involving the Hip and kids gets some attention... when a real story involving the Hip and kids such as the Holiday Jam benefit goes largely unnoticed.

If they only have one rink on Victoria Island then that's hurt'n, who cares what age the kids are, their'll be plenty of tourny's for them to play in.
I'm sure now a few of their parents can go enjoy the concert instead of worrying about their kids glorified tournament...

I suggest bringing the kids to the show, in full uniform, to crash the stage during the kids don't get it...that would be news worthy...then bust into the lonely end of the rink...
