The Hip in The House of Commons - Stephen Dame - 12-06-2006
Back in the office after 9 months of leadership junk, I've decided to slip in a Hip reference to a statement my boss will give in the House of Commons on Friday, December 8th.
Alan Tonks will rise to give a brief statement on Somalia in which he will say "river over-spilling its banks."
The clerk of the HOC called to say that she doesn't think "over-spilling" is proper and she's probably right. But meh, I figure we'll get a kick out of it. Live on CPAC, between 11am and 11:15am right before QP. It's a Standing Order 31.

Milliken is a weird guy. He likes to tell people that he sleeps in the bed where Mackenzie-King died. But, bring up the Hip, specifically Bobby Baker, and he's a teenage girl. Yap, yap, yap, yap, yap. He's proud of the hometown band.

Last night I dreamed, Last night I dreamed
That the Tragically Hip played an impromptu show at the House of Commons!
They played a two song set(It could have been more, but I woke up after two...) They opened with Springtime in Vienna and finished off with Pigeon Camera. Dame and I seemed to be the only ones in there actually enjoying the performance though... Pretty cool how a thread can influence one's dreams... :lol:

Somalia (11:00)
Mr. Alan Tonks (York South—Weston, Lib.):
Mr. Speaker, recently the Hiran region of Somalia was devastated by torrential rain and subsequent flooding. The Shabelle River is overspilling its banks and over 70,000 people have been displaced. The death toll, which today stands at nearly 200, will continue to rise.
The Somali government has warned of an imminent humanitarian disaster if aid agencies do not rapidly deliver food and other essential items to the region. Many of the roads which will allow for the delivery of said aid are becoming increasingly inaccessible.
In York--South Weston and throughout the greater Toronto area thousands of Canadians of Somali origin are worried and doing all they can to help their loved ones.
I am confident that all members of the House will join with me in urging the government, through the capable offices of CIDA and the Minister of International Cooperation, to do all we can to supply Somalia with the malaria tents, water purification systems, cholera medication and food products it so desperately needs.
Somalia needs Canada's help and we must act now.

For some reason this reminds me of "Fight Club". An underground legion of Hip fans, hidden amongst the masses, secretly throwing hip references and subliminal messages to one another. If only...
