Who still lives in the town they grew up in? - Stephen Dame - 11-05-2006

I've been on the road a ton for work, and it'll all finally end during the first week of December. I'm going to go home to Georgetown, Ontario the weekend after. I'm really looking forward to it. I moved away after high school, and because "The G-Spot" is a bedroom community outside T.O., most of my friends did the same. I've often wondered what it would have been like if I'd stayed.... or if I go back.

Any of you twenty or thirty something's set up shop in your home town? Pros? Cons?

- soquester - 11-05-2006

I'm still not at the "set up shop" stage, but I still officially live in Toronto... I suppose it's not quite the same for big-city folk as it is for people from small towns..

Nope, I'm far, far away across the country from where I grew up. I moved from T.O. to Vancouver 4 years ago and I really love it out here.

I was born and raised in Kingston. Moved to Toronto in 1996 for university and stayed. If there was work for me in Kingston when I graduated I would have moved back. Ten years later I'm still in Toronto and planning for the day that I can retire to the Kingston area.

One of my lifelong friends followed a similar path to me, except he moved back to Kingston after grad. Our lives were very similar up to that point. Now they are quite different - he's enjoying the small town bringdown while I'm loving the city life and travelling, etc...

I was born ouside of Quebec City, but I've moved around a lot since then. I moved from there when I was four, to Halifax, and now I'm in Toronto. I plan to maybe move back to Quebec, but if I do, probably Montreal.

My dad was more stationary than I was. He was born in Kingston, and raised in Odessa about 5 minutes away, and only moved after he graduated from Queens. Mostof my family still lives around there.

I was raised in a small town on Georgian Bay called Penetanguishene (born in Halifax) and then through various stops – Guelph -- London, Ont. and Eugene Oregon I am now in my second stint in the Peg.
As for moving back, while I did not appreciate the beauty of Penetanguishene as a kid – (few do I suspect) I would like to experience it now and would settle back if the right opportunity ever presented itself

I've never left, I was born, raised and still live in Alliston, a town about 25min south of Barrie. I like it here and may end up staying here but at the same time I'm not opposed to the idea of living somewhere else. Right now the town where I work is about a 15min drive, I wouldn't want much more than that I think, driving from Toronto or Barrie everyday would kill me, although living in Toronto would sure make the late night concerts easier to deal with, except that I'd have to get up that much earlier.

My town is definitely the best one to live in, in a 20min radius, has lots of stores but not too many although the big chains are certanly taking their toll on the ma & pa stores.

I'm pretty easy going so I can adapt to pretty much anything, wheather I stay here or go somewhere else. A lot of my family is near by which is good sometimes, but not always Big Grin

Born in Brockville......lived there until I was 13
Moved to Cambridge.....lived there until I was 18
Moved to London (for my undergrad). Was there until I was 22.
Moved to Vancouver for my Masters, stayed for work, until I was 29.
Moved to Oakville for work (in Toronto), lived there until I was 31.
Couldn't get out fast enough - back out west, this time Calgary - for the last three years. Hoping to stay here for a long time.

- direwolf74 - 11-06-2006

I do. I grew up in a couple of different places, namely Calgary and Denver, Colorado where my family lived for 6 years before moving back to Cowtown in 1988. With the exception of a 3 year stint in Ottawa from 2000 to 2003, I've pretty much spent the majority of my life here in Calgary. I definitely consider this place my hometown and I don't see myself leaving anytime soon.

- VioletlightHeron - 11-06-2006

Where to start? Well I've never lived in one city for more than six years, but I lived in the state of Wisconsin for 16 years so I guess I can consider that my "home state". Was born in Washington DC, moved to Virginia when I was a toddler, spent about 5 years there, then moved to Puerto Rico for 4 years, moved to Connecticut and spent 4 years there, then moved to Wisconsin and lived in 4 different towns there, all about an hour from each other and now currently living in Alaska. I don't have a hometown mentality and would probably not leave a city simply because it is home. I'm leaving Alaska in a couple months (hopefully sooner!) and I think I'd move if the job was right, I liked or was interested in the city I would move to and my girlfriend was amiable to the move. She has veto power

Born in Wilmington, DE
Lived in Smyrna, DE until I was 5.
Moved back and forth between Wilmington, DE (mom, school) and Middletown, DE (dad) until I graduated high school in 2002.
Went to Syracuse, NY for college and planned on staying in New York state.
Plans changed for the better after meeting Esthete and I moved in Cincinnati, OH 3 months ago.

I don't live there, I just commute. I work around my hometown but have chosen to live the city life rather than the suburban, cookie cutter house, big-box store life. My parents still live in my hometown and when I'm out and about for work I sometimes see people I went to high school with who never left the place.
