Seated Venues - Zenith - 10-28-2006
Hi guys, I was just wondering your oppinions on this matter...
Are most of the venues on this current tour (and venues in Canada in general) all seated? It seems to me a lot of them are, but do you think that this takes something away from the gig experience? Personally, if at all possible I prefer to have standing tickets at a concert (and usually at least 98% of concerts over here will have some form of standing section).
I am just interested to know your thoughts. Obviously, I'd rather have a seated ticket for a Hip show than no ticket at all.

Well, from my experiences, I stand in seated venues anyways, but I find that general admission seating can be dangerous. From the reviews that have been posted from the Phoenix shows this past week, it seems that, for the most part, the crowds were well-behaved. But then there is the other side (read the reviews from the 6/30/06 Charlottetown show) where a bunch of drunks ruin the show for a lot of people. During the 2004 Canadian tour, we had floor seats for both Sydney and Halifax. Sydney was front row, centre, and I had the video camera with me. I had a bit of concern before the show about being pushed around up there, but we weren't even touched. Having the camera front row centre at a GA-seating show would be impossible (although the Utrecht DVD may prove that thoery wrong).
I guess what it all boils down to is: general admission or seated venues don't make a show; the crowd does.

I think the phioenix shpws were so well behaved casue it was a 19+ crowd, a crowd who has growne up wth the hip --- not some emo/edgefest kids looking to crowd surf and mash all nite.
It jsut depends on the crowd like said above. But im getting too old for the pushy crowded GA shows, I like the arena shows casue I get "myspace" I have a seat - I have a number.. if I goto get a beer, and come back, myseats still there.

I think that Bill hit the nail on the head with all of his comments! Although 19+ does not guarantee there won't be jerks.

Case in point: The Trews show I was at Wednesday. Add really cheap Molson products with a bunch of morons and something bad is bound to happen.
GA is great in a bar, but once you get a building that holds over 2000 people, you're just asking for trouble.

Almost all of the shows down here in the states are GA (with the exception of upstate New York)
I very much prefer the GA shows - more freedom to move around, stand, dance. You are not at the mercy of people in front/behind/beside you.
And if need be - more freedom to get away from Captain Sir-Drink-Alot.

)...and if it's GA, that's fair game, you can hate me for it, but i'd prefer that the crowd mosh and crowd surf and dance and go crazy for the hip...it adds to the experience IMO...the wilder the better, i don't care this time around because i got 2nd row tix...but GA ensures EVERYBODY has the same chance of getting up front...you just gotta blaze your own trail so to speak...i know i'm almost alone on this...but i welcome the drunken idiots...and the rowdiness...i LOVE CHAOS :twisted:...it's always been a dream of mine to participate in a riot LOL!...i'm a metalhead though, and i'm used to Cannibal Corpse and Hatebrees and crazy moshpits from an early age, and it makes me laugh when people complain about a hip show being too ruckus...because even the wildest of hip shows pales in comparison to just how rowdy a crowd can truly be...it doesn't even have anything to do with liquor...it has to do with excitement level, most people at a hips show HAVEN'T seen them multiple times, and don't care about recording the show or taking pictures, they're their to enjoy possibly the one time they see the hip to the fullest, and god bless em, hopefully they go back to see them, but if not, i want their experience to be as legendary as possible).

Yeah, I'd say you're alone on that. I don't see how bumping into people and pushing people down adds to the enjoyment of watching a rock concert. Personally, I'm there to listen and WATCH the band play great music. I'm not there to try to prove how tough I am by taking my shirt off and just ramming people. People should take that rough behaviour to a shitty punk concert where the music is the least important thing and the whole idea is to go, get drunk, spit on people, mosh, elbow and kick, and be a complete jackass. The Hip are actual musicians who are there to play music, they're not some punk band telling the audience to be anarchists and create havoc and riot. In a seated concert, the fan has every opportunity to jump up and down and dance to the music within their own space. You don't need 30 feet of room to move to the music.
Zenith, if I had a choice, I'd choose a seated event every time. Your seat is GUARANTEED and you don't have to worry every five seconds about a herd of uncivilized goons trying to knock you over to get closer to the front.

Maybe the small club shows are great for GA in the US. I know that I was at the mercy of everyone around me in Charlottetown. I tried to move farther back in the crowd and the drunk rednecks wouldn't even let me move BACK! I was being shoved from every angle and had to literally fight with all my might to move. Just ask Highlander. Unfortunately, I wither in comparison to his size. I was following him back in Charlottetown and was smothered after about 30 seconds of following him. He made it through, I didn't. :x Fortunately, I found a spot a little to the side that wasn't quite as rowdy where I watched the rest of the show.
I also know that I saw Gord Downie perform in Charlottetown and it was alright for most of the show but there were still people around me elbowing a bit and shoving.

I totally agree, I can't stand drunk assholes. On the Wednesday night show at the Phoenix some drunk piece of shit kept bumping into me, and then he was getting mad at me for being in his way. Nothing makes me happier than when I see these dumb morons get ripped out of the crowd by security. Bobbing along to the music and dancing a little bit is one thing, but there is absolutely no need to bump into people and try to knock them over.
