Ben Ca-something or other had some nice things to say about the album, and the Hip in general. Hey Ben...go home, put on your Thriller album, and jerk yourself a soda. Dose.ca sounds like another "trendy" little fly by night operation.

The Tragically Hip, World Container (Universal)

The Deal: Yes, they’re still making records. The Hip is back with this Bob Rock-produced 11th studio album.
As with most of their work since 1996’s Trouble at the Henhouse, Canada’s most Canadian Canadians have put together a technically competent, somewhat literate collection of songs that ultimately fail to illicit much of an emotional response in the listener. The cottage-friendly lineup of tunes hits a mid-tempo rock plateau and stays there for much of the album, which is also lyrically inventive and musically boring.
The Hip were at their best when singer Gord Downie’s idiosyncratic Canadiana-laced lyrics still blended with the group’s “Canada’s Best Bar Band” musical skills — best exemplified in songs like “Three Pistols,” “Nautical Disaster” and the near-sublime “50 Mission Cap.” There was a grittiness to both that evoked the Canadian experience in an unpretentious and artful way —which was ultimately the key to the band’s unprecedented success.
Downie’s poetic predilections have long since outgrown the band’s musical ones, but, for what ever reasons, the two remain attached and making albums.
Were we the type of people to draw sweeping, overly romantic analogies, we might compare the Hip’s weary marriage to Canada’s excessively-utilized “Two Solitudes” of English and French. But we’re not. If you want to stick with something that’s clearly not working anymore, be our guest. To us, it’s just sad.

Too harsh at the end. But I rather agree with this:
The cottage-friendly lineup of tunes hits a mid-tempo rock plateau and stays there for much of the album, which is also lyrically inventive and musically boring.
It sounds kinda like everything else on the radio.

Hey, im a hip fan, I can't actually give an unbiased opinion of this album...
but I do know that it's one of their best albums, and considering the quality of their previous albums, that makes this album a 7 out of 5 in my books...

Yeah, I'm not sure if I'd rank it ahead of RA or DFN but it sure sounds good to me. I mean, 2.5 out of 5? Give me a break.

hock: This album will get some great reviews and some bad ones because it is a pretty radical change for them sonically. The production is much different than any of their previous albums and the songs have a different structure. There's nothing sad about Gord Downie and The Hip though; nothing at all.

I'm listening to "The Drop-Off" and I think the music is a bit too loud for thattreview to actually register in my brain. It must be too loud. It couldn't be that the reviewer is full of sh- No. Couldn't be...

This reads like a Mike Bell review (former Calgary Sun critic). It's pretty obvious that this guy didn't even listen to the record. He doesn't mention anything specific about any of the songs, nor does he mention any of the song titles or cite any of the lyrics. He obviously has a hate-on for the Hip, and he's just trying to get in some jabs. That's all it is.

Who the hell us "our" and "us" referring to in this sentence? It's certainly not the fans, considering how well this album was received by the fans and the fact that alot of them find it has quite a different sound to it...
Next time he wants to speak for someone besides himself, he should take into consideration the opinions of the people he is speaking for. What a Douche...

It's no surprise that someone out there doesn't enjoy the new album. And I'll be the second to agree that the band, on this album (much like their last couple), has lost its "cottage-friendly lineup of tunes." I don't particularly find this to be as catastrophic as he does. That being said, I am a sucker for the acoustic campfire staples of the Hip collection.
I enjoy World Container. I'm more into this album than I was IVL and IBE. But, I was shocked (yet not really) to find very little criticism around here. This review was harsh and Ben's likely anti-Hip. But everyone here is pro-Hip and as such, it's hard to find an unbiased review.
After nearly 20 years of making music, a band is going to evolve. Some fans ride the wave, others jump on and off as they please and some people never catch the wave at all. He just may be one that doesn't like which way the band is going - that's fine. He'll keep listening to Wheat Kings on repeat.

Take it with a grain of salt. Emotions run feverish when loyalty is questioned. It would be like someone writing something about your sister on the washroom wall in school...
Love the album like it's your own because it is.

If I may summarize: "I feel sorry for people like you who like this album and think it's good. You're clearly inferior to me. I stopped listening after Nautical Disaster and you didn't."
