Went last night - WAY TOO POLITICAL. Could have been an amazing show but he ruined it. I paid to see Dark Side of the Moon - not listen to his politial views.
2 thumbs down for you Roger.

That's too bad -- I sympathize with your disdain.
If the bulk of an artist's work is laced with political commentary, then he or she can let the art / performance send the message.
Dark Side of the Moon has some political overtones and some social commentary, and that's fine, but I, too would not want to hear Waters drone on and on with his political views if I paid to see him perform the legendary art he created 30 freaking years ago.
I'm tired of established, aging rock artists using live appearances billed as "musical performances" as a soapbox on which pontificate on politics and social issues, and charging audiences to sit through it.
If you want to speak out,
do it by writing material that conveys your politics and perform it.

Anyone who goes to see Roger Waters without expecting political commentary doesn't really know who he's going to see.
He is one of the most politicized musicians around. If you want to hear Dark Side of the Moon without hearing about Water's politics, your best friend is your CD player.
And no, you don't have a right or entitlement to hear it live on your terms. Your only right is the right to complain that you can't.

Well, Skippy, when I went to a Roger Waters show here in Cincy a few years back, I "expected to see" Roger Waters do a kick-ass show of some solo material and Floyd gems, and anticipated a few, brief politically-charged comments here and there, and that's
exactly what I saw.
It sounds to me like he injected a whole heckuva lot more this time around, and that's garbage (maybe Kitty-Kat could elaborate). If I had gone, I naturally would have "expected" about the same sort of thing as I saw before -- why wouldn't I? And if it was completely bogged down with twice the amount of dissertation, I'd be pissed, and justifiably so.
Skippy Wrote:And no, you don't have a right or entitlement to hear it live on your terms."
I'm so tired of hearing that pathetic disclaimer. Entitlement? What the hell are you talking about? If the show is billed and sold as
"Roger Waters -- Dark Side of the Moon", THAT is what an audience can reasonably "expect" to hear -- Roger Waters, performing music from the Dark Side of the Moon.
Unless the show billed as "Roger Waters -- Dark Side of the Moon...and assorted political ramblings & dissertations", an attendee has the right to expect something that constitutes a musical performance, not a combination concert-lecture.
On one thing you are correct -- Waters can do whatever the hell he wants to onstage. But that
doesn't mean that the paid attendance isn't justified in feeling like they've been
gypped if his performance is marred by preaching.

And if he performs DSOTM, then you've got what you paid for. You don't get to demand that it's performed in a particular way. You may complain that it was a bad performance, but you pays your money and you takes your chances.
The audience pays to see Roger Waters do DSOTM. In point of fact, that's what the audience got last night. Thanks to the wonders of technology, I've listened to the show. Now, I haven't had time to listen to the whole DSOTM performance, but that part isn't politically charged and doesn't, by its nature, leave much room for ranting. Let me summarize for you the entire content of Roger Water's stage patter during this performance:
1) on several occasions, he thanks the audience. The bastard!
2) he introduces the song "Leaving Beirut" by spending about one minute recounting a story of how, while touring Lebanon as a teenager, he was taken in by an Arab family, and now wonders what became of them. How political can you get!
3) finally, the fucker spends 2-1/2 minutes introducing his band. The bastard!
I didn't hear any political commentary from the stage, outside of the setlist:
Roger Waters Wrote:In The Flesh
Mother
Set The Controls For the Heart Of The Sun
Shine On You Crazy Diamond
Have A Cigar
Wish You Were Here
Southampton Dock
The Fletcher Memorial Home
Perfect Sense parts 1 and 2
Leaving Beirut
Sheep
SECOND SET:
Dark Side of the Moon
ENCORE:
Happiest Days Of Our Lives/Another Brick In The Wall (Pt 2)
Vera
Bring the Boys back Home
Comfortably Numb
Alas, you've already agreed that it's acceptable for an artist to perform politically charged songs -- and if you're going to see Waters, you more or less have to expect that.
So I guess we don't disagree.
p.s. No, I didn't download it just to trump you. I downloaded it because the posting on Dime said it was a good recording, and I like Roger W.

Weren't you the guy getting pissed when we told you to go home and listen to the CD if you didn't want to hear people singing along to the music at a show? I think it was you, but I'm not sure.

I'm the guy who argued that crowd noise and crowd reaction is part of the experience -- although there are limits, i.e., the idiot standing behind you who howls all the lyrics at the top of his lungs. You pays your money and you takes your chances:

Nice try, but no cigar. Maybe next time you should make sure.
The fact is, Waters is a political songwriter. He writes political songs, and he plays them. It's not a secret, and the setlist is his to decide. You pays your money and you takes your chances. You have to take the good with the bad.
If you can't take that, then yes, your CD player is your friend.

Oh, well, then no. Not this time.
But I'm sure you'll find a reason soon.

Well, went to see the show last night at the ACC.....................it was beyond stellar...............Dark Side Of The Moon was absolutely flawless............
Highlights from the first set for me were The Fletcher Memorial and Perfect Sense 1 & 2..............had to love the floating space man going over the crowd during Perfect Sense! And yes, the pig was there too!
As far as being too political............ ......??? I don't get it, yes there were a few photos of Bush pop up on the screen, the pig had "Impeach Bush" and "Don't be led to the slaugher, Vote Nov 7", but beyond that, and the obvious war/anti war songs (as noted by Skippy above), there was nothing political about the show whatsoever.
The only comments Waters made was his intorduction to Leaving Beruit, and the typical "Good Evening", "Good Night", "Thank You", and "this has always been a great music city"................that was about it for speaking...........not too political
I paid to see Dark Side, I saw Dark Side, plus an additional 90 minutes of unforgettable music from one of musics true geniuses...........priceless......... :thumb:

Exactly what I saw in Detroit! Kittykatfish did get to see DSOTM, in its entirety, with no banter what so ever. She must have hated Sheep........
