You guys have no idea how freakin' jealous I am. As I've said before, Mr. Waits is on my list of "artists I have to see before I die", and the chances of him playing anywhere near Calgary are slim to none. But if he played Vancouver or Seattle, I'd make the trip in a heartbeat. Who knows when he'll ever tour again?

Fantastic photos; thanks for sharing them. I was at the concert as well, and I can say (from a musical standpoint anyway) that I can now die happy, having seen the great Tom Waits work his mojo. Coincidentally, I was able to snag a setlist as well, as well as a poster, which are waiting to be matted and framed for all eternity. A friend of mine snuck down to the stage area during the encores, and as the show ended, nabbed me a bottle of Tom's water, which at this point might as well be the closest I'll need to come to owning holy water. Staph infection? Hit it with the Tom Water. Hepatitis? Tom Water.

I am such a geek. But a happy one nonetheless.

Esthete and I are heading to the show in Louisville tonight. I am about ten thousand kinds of excited.

Dare I say it, but I think I'm looking forward to this more than a Hip show, simply based on the fact that Mr. Waits doesn't really tour...ever. Esthete directed me to a Waits fan site which stated that some of the cities he is playing on this swing haven't been visited since the 70s. Confused

hock: I feel all kinds of fortunate. I'll be bringing my crappy little camera along so hopefully we can get some pics and maybe some video.

Stand by for a setlist and review to be posted tomorrow morning!

Tom was a wonderfully engaging performer -- full of stories and quips. Esthete and I ventured that Gord could take a few tips from Mr. Waits on how to handle bumbled or forgotten lyrics. :wink:

He managed to forget the third verse of "Tango 'Til They're Sore" but recoved by chatting with the audience and plunking away at the keys. It was interesting, but not at all in a bad way.

I would have liked to have heard a bit more off of Mule Variations, but I suppose you listen to what the man has to play and don't ask favors or questions.

Overall, it was an incredible experience. I like knowing that he really exists and isn't some creepy shadow with a freaky voice.

Once I find my cable for my camera I'll see if the one photo I managed to get is worth posting.

Actually, the guitarist is Duke Robillard, who is very competant, and his style, though nothing flashy, lends itself very well to the atmosphere of Waits' setlist.

Jenna only got one shot inside the venue as cameras were prohibited and the staff was seeking out any flashbulbs...

I loved the show; so very much a true musical "performance", as opposed to a "pop concert". Knowing that Waits is reluctant to perform these days (hence the 8-show "tour"), I expected him to be brusque and deliberate; but he was quite the opposite. He was warm and funny, high-spirited and even chatty. He had us eating from the palm of his hand.

Another item of note it that he rarely used the thin, raspy, whiny singing voice he sang with in most of his early work (as in "Clap Hands"), not even on numbers from later works where he applied that style (like "Get Behind the Mule"), nor did he ever use his "normal" singing voice (like in "Ol' '55" or "The Heart of Saturday Night"); he mostly uses that deep, coarse, growl, characteristic of most of his late work or older songs like "Singapore". That was my only lament....

WASN'T IT COOL???

Did you know his son was on drums, I couldn't believe how much they looked a like.. He had his back turned to the audience, but you could see his profile..

I had to sneak the camera in as well..I taped up the on light and turned off the backlight, made it difficult, and blurry..but - kinda works.
