EDMONTON (CP) _ Two young Edmonton men have been sentenced to prison for a night of rampaging violence that left a man dead and a woman severely injured.
Provincial court Judge Clayton Spence told a packed courtroom Friday that Benjamin Nepoose, 20, and Adam Scoville, 19, deserved long sentences for the Sept. 20, 2005 attacks.
But the judge said he reduced their time in prison so as ``to not crush the spirit of the accused.'' Spence said he also gave the men credit for their guilty pleas, youth and background.
Nepoose, who earlier pleaded guilty to manslaughter and aggravated assault, was sentenced to 11 years in prison. Scoville, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter, was sentenced to nine years in prison. Both men were given credit for the time they spent in pre-trial custody.
Outside court, Shannon and Carol Jacobs, sisters of victim Adrian Jacobs, said they were upset with the sentences and vowed to check up personally on the two killers when they have parole hearings.
``It's shocking,'' said a visibly upset Carol Jacobs. ``We expected 12 to 14 years. Ten is not enough.''
Shannon echoed her sister's comments, saying she had hoped for the maximum punishment possible.
``They took away my brother's life,'' she sobbed.
Court heard Nepoose, Scoville and a 13-year-old youth had shared three 40-ounce bottles of malt liquor and some of them had taken either Valium or Tylenol 4s the night of Sept. 20.
Court heard the trio were on their way to a liquor store in the city's north end when Nepoose picked up a cinder block, smashed it into smaller pieces and said, ``Nobody can mess with us now.''
The three came across Tanya Powder, 21, and a cousin. Words were exchanged and Powder hit the youth in the face for unknown reasons. Powder was then attacked and the youth stabbed her four times. Nepoose then hit Powder in the head with a piece of the cinder block.
Powder had a heart attack at the scene and nearly died. She spent almost a month in hospital recovering from a collapsed lung, fractured sinus bones above her eyebrows, a probable concussion and stab wounds to the chest and armpit.
Twenty minutes later, the three ran into Jacobs. Words were exchanged and they met up in the centre of the road. Jacobs was punched, kicked and stabbed 21 times during the beating. He managed to escape, but died less than a block away of blood loss.
Neither of the victims were known to the attackers.
The youth, now 14, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced on June 5 to two years in custody followed by one year of supervision.

I agree that is lenient for sure...if you're really pissed about it you could always move to Texas!!

Thats absurd, the death penalty would be more than fitting in this case.

Yeah, my wife and I were just talking about this bastard. I'm typically never for the death penalty, but I gotta say, this fucker sure seems like a prime candidate if there ever was one. At the very least, lock him up with no parole...ever.
