Okay, I review gigs for the local paper here in Portsmouth, UK. So I thought I'd share my little reviews with you guys... they aren't great, but I enjoy doing it (it's not my job... I do it for fun and the occasional free ticket). Please feel free to leave comments of any kind.
Billy Talent + Reuben. Wedgewood Rooms, Portsmouth, 11th July '06
The Wedgewood Rooms were sold out for this event, which was so highly anticipated by it's mostly teenaged audience that many of them were sat outside the venue for hours before the doors opened in an attempt to see their band.
First up were Reuben, whose heavy guitar anthems were marred by sludgy vocals and poor sound. This didn't seem to bother the kids pogo-ing at the front of the stage area though. These youngsters will definitely have sent a few people home as fans.
Most people were here just for one band though, and Toronto's Billy Talent didn't disappoint, their polished Pop Punk driving the crowd crazy from the first chord! They aren't a band that do anything new and they'll probably spend a long time in Fall Out Boy's huge shadow, but a charismatic and friendly lead singer and some tight well played music should ensure a steadily growing fan base, even if their most ardent followers were being thrown about like rag dolls in the mosh pit.
Pick of their short, sharp tunes was The Suffering, a surprisingly mature track that sounded different to most everything else the band played, with a harder, thicker noise reminiscent of Korn. This song in particular invoked a wave of crowd surfing from the audience that, once it had started, refused to stop!

Hmmm, interesting points of view about BT. I've never thought that all their stuff sounds the same...well, except for the screeching of the lead singer Ben. I'll have to listen more closely. I am getting sick of hearing "Devil in a Midnight Mass" over and over again on the radio though. :roll:

Billy Talent, is probably the worst sounding band I have ever heard. I guess I am just old, but I think they suck ass

and guys, believe me I didn't ask to go to see Billy Talent, but I'm hoping to get the reviews for a few bandsI like that are coming soon, so this will earn me some brownie points as none of the paid reporters would do it!

Billy-No Talent makes me want to puke! Why cant a band just blow me away and make me fall in love with them anymore??? The last band to do that was The White Stripes.

Ah, Billy No-Talent... my girlfriend used to call them that around the time the first record came out.
I'm looking forward to seeing them and writing on them, if they head north during the school year. Having been blown away pre-breakout by them in some pretty small venues, it'll be interesting to put on the rock critic glasses and see them now. Now ideally, it'll be the same kind of experence, but you never know. Depends if I have to fight through the sixteen year olds or not I guess.
Last band that really blew me away, having heard nothing about them/by them before was Holy Fuck at NXNE 2005. Before that it was probably Keane when they opened for Travis in 2003. And before that, likely, it was Billy Talent (winding my way back into the topic). They played the third stage at Edgefest and were a highlight of the day (and actually, with the lineup that year, if Tool hadn't been there, they would have been the highlight).
And about Keane: I said it then, and I stand by it -- they're better than Coldplay.

The last band that truly blew me away was The Weakerthans. I still remember the first time I saw them. They were opening for the Rheostatics at the University of Calgary back in '97 or '98, and I was absolutely floored by John Samson's brilliant lyrics. The second the guy opened his mouth I was a fan. Of course it also helped that the band ROCKED and that their songs were so fucking great. I ended up buying their first album "Fallow" at the merch table after the show, and I've been in love with them ever since.
Before that it was probably Wilco.

gomez really blew away the first time i saw them live..and i like billy talent..i think they have potential to be around for a long time
