Rock Star: Supernova - robert goulet - 07-06-2006

Well the first episode aired last night and I gotta re-iterate just how much I love this show. Once again they have 15 really talented singers and amongst those 15 there are 5 or 6 incredible singers.

The best part of the show is listening to the House Band, they're freakin' incredible, I'd pay just to hear them.

Only 2 Canadians this time around, 1 iffy girl from Vancouver (who had the nerve to play a f*cking Nickelback song!!!) and 1 freaky lookin' dude from Toronto, with a mild case of Mongoloidism as far as I can tell. They really seem to have attracted some real "characters" this time around...once you tune in you'll see what I mean...definitely more rock and roll than the INXS version, which is a great thing!!

I'm looking forward to watching this every week throughout the summer.

Yeah, I bet winning a TV show gives you a load of rock & roll cred.

sadly, in this day and age, it does Sad

I just don't understand why anyone would want to throw away any possibility of making it as a singer and not as someone who won a TV show. No matter how talented the winner of this show or American Idol or whetever, they will always be known as "that guy that won the TV show". I'd much rather not be a huge star but still make music that I want to make instead of being some machine whose only purpose is to churn out hit after hit. Just imagine if, I dunno, Gord D. won Canadian Idol and decided to form The Hip. I doubt any of us would like them, even if they put out all the same records. This would be a Sam Roberts board and we wouldn't even consider trying out The Hip because they would have absolutely no credibility to us. We wouldn't hear their music and we wouldn't know how awesome of a band they are. And, I mean, I guess American Idol works for a certain amount of time. You make one or two platinum records and everyone forgets about you. This show? Not once have I heard someone say, "Hey, check out this band. They got the winner from that Rock Star show". Not once. And I doubt I ever will, either.

Rock Star and American Idol are 2 totally different shows. If you've seen only one, or neither you can't judge them.

That's too funny. He did put on a good show however...his eye makeup highlighted his huge forehead. The first chi..uh girl was really good. Strong or something of that sort...not gonna look it up, but she's my ealry pick.

I've seen both.

I dug the show last year, but something is bugging me about this one. I can't see this band making any kind of a splash at all and Tommy Lee just seems like he wants attention and doesn't really care about the music. There seemed to be a couple decent singers but no one really grabbed me. And isn't Motley Crue still touring?

- mark - 07-06-2006

my early pick is the canadian dude. he was awesome.

and i agree with goulet. that house band is fucking awesome

- emperor penguin - 07-06-2006

that girl who sang Lithium was pretty good.

I'm sorry, was that supposed to be L.A. Woman?? Cause it sucked.
Let Jim Morrison be Jim Morrison

- thedarkcanuck - 07-07-2006

i think the jim imitator should of been booted last night, he was brutal

Last year the house band was awsome, this year (only 1 show) to me they sucked. They were off the whole night. The Toronto dude sucks. The Vancouver girl is hot, but sucked. The Lithuium girl was cool till she started freaking out, then went overboard. The Jefferson Starship girl has the best voice and she will go till the end. Girl singers are great but when they try to act tough or "cool", it make me mental and I can't stand it. They look stupid. I'm not syaing they should just stand there and look pretty (if they can...) but don't "TRY" to act cool. It doesn't work.

i couldn't stand the lithium Chick, and when she whigged out she looked like and idiot. This group doesn't seem to be nearly as talented as last years group.
The Doors cover was bad and I don't even like the doors, that guy probably should have gone, Poor choice picking the Duran Duran although he did a good job with it even if it was the band carrying him most of the way through.

I watched bits and pieces of this show both nights. I liked Storm or whatever her name was who sang "Pinball Wizard," and I agree that the dude from Toronto looks like an alien. He also seems like the kind of guy you'd very quickly decide you wanted to kick in the crotch, but maybe he'll improve upon longer acquaintance.

And the guy who got booted--didn't the judges give him good comments the night before? I understand that the judges might like someone the audience doesn't so it's not like I'm surprised that he ended up in the bottom three, but I sort of assumed he'd therefore have the best chance of being one the judges decided to keep. And then he sings Duran Duran and out he goes. Ouch! He must be wishing he could have a do-over on that one!

Also: I must be getting old, because I realized partway through the show that most of the candidates look exactly alike to me. They all have that "edgy rocker style" with the tattoos and the piercings, and I can hardly tell one from the other. It's a little weird.

If I were a contestant on this show, the single question I'd be asking myself is, "How confident am I that this band won't suck?" Because really, just because these guys are all famous doesn't mean they'll have chmistry with each other. And Gilby Clarke was in G'N'R just as they began their slide to irrelevance, so that's no recommendation. (Although I will say he has a very good-natured face. I'm beginning to like him.)
