Open C Tuning? - Fleeter - 06-29-2006

Anybody here ever play ahead by a century (ABAC) in open C. I I saw Rob with a capo on the 2nd fret and strumming it open during the song - now knowing it's in D I'm just wondering what the other fingering would be for the other chords in the song. Any help or if anyone can direct me to a site where I can find this would be great....thx.

This is absolutely the correct way to play ABAC...when I showed my friend this he was floored. He, who is an incredible guitar player, started mucking around with this setup and then came to the conclusion that a number of U2 songs are also played in this tuning.

I have known about this tuning for "Ahead By A Century" for a while now, but I'm not the greatest guitarist and dont know how to tune to open c. other than having an electric tuner, how could i learn to get my guitar to this?

I went to the link and it shows the tuning for each string there. Most simple guitar tuners only have the 6 notes (ebgdae), but if you have a better one it will have the "c". I tuned my acoustic to open c and capoed it in the 2nd fret and it does sound a lot better than playing the straight d. The fingering for the chords is taking me a little time to get used to because I've played the song so many times live in standard tuning I seem to want to jump to a g or a. The tuning set up for open C from the top string down is as follows C G C G C E. The top string will be a little slack at C but it sounds cool. Good luck.

I appreatiate your input to the situation, however, I dont know what to use as a reference point to get each string to CGCGCE doing it manually by ear. Can you shed some light on this dilema?

It's tough without a tuner however it can be done. You might want to google Open C tuning, or open guitar tunings and follow steps they give to get you started. You can get a cheap tuner at any music store for 20 - 30 bucks that'll help you a little quicker.

If you look closely under the wierd fonts of the notes you'll see a tiny link "Listen to MP3 of this tuning" that will play the notes for you to hear what it should sound like. Can prolly download other MP3's of different tunings there as well.

I don't like open tunings only because of the time it takes to get into them. When I figured out Ahead by a Century I did it in drop D tuning. Check it out:

nice! Is this the way you think Paul plays it? It seems like he uses the same guitar for the whole show haha
I'll have to check this out when I get home. But I agree it takes me forever to get into them and my Strat has a floating trem so it takes everything a while a get in tune. But using an open tuning then a capo was too much for me :lol:

A lot of U2 songs come in this tuning too...play around with the capo positions and you'll immediately hear familiar U2 songs appear.

Nope. It's just tuned down a 1/2 step. That's it.
