The Deal Of The Century - Billy - 06-05-2006

at least that's what I'm calling it.

So I was in Superstore tonight, returning and exchanging some stuff. As I was waiting to talk to the customer service lady, a young dude, who worked there, asked her what he should do with the bbq over there? She told him to call the manager, which he did. As I was talking to the customer service lady, I heard the young dude exclaim, "Really, take it to the compactor"? I perked up and asked the lady if it was heading for the garbage, and she said it sure was. Apparently the burner was defective, so the guy returned it for another. I had even opened it and looked inside while I was waiting in line...the grills hadn't even been cooked on. I was shocked and quite appalled that they were going to just toss it in the garbage compactor, so I asked her if I could buy it. She said that was against store policy. I asked to speak to a manger, and so she called one. A lady came a short while later and I explained what had just happened and she concurred that it was store policy to garbage defective merchandise. I explained that for $25 I could replace the burner and have a brand new bbq, if she'd only sell me this one. She hummed and hawed and finally agreed and said she'd give it to me for $125 (it retails for $200) I told her I would only pay $50, to which she countered with $75. I said that 2 minutes ago it was heading for the trash, so $50 is a pretty good deal for the both of us.

Anyways, I got it for $50 and after getting it all set up, I have discovered that not a goddamned thing is wrong with it. The only flaw is the plastic drink holder on the front is broken. I probably would have taken it off anyways, and when it's removed, you don't even notice it's gone.

LOL!! That is one of the dumbest policies ever. Way to stick to your guns on the $50...$125 would have been ridiculous. Good find.

No wonder we as consumers pay so much for goods nowadays. They trash anything that doesn't work rather than fix it and eventually the cost of that waste is passed onto us. Grrreat.

i worked at crappy tire a few years ago & they did the same thing..... someone would break a socket in a 300 piece socket set and they would throw the whole thing away and replace it with a new set. a good portion
of my tool collection was built with this policy :lol:

Speaking of dumb policies, in a semi-related vein......

I heard a story about someone in another government department ordering some kind of office equipment. The company sent the wrong one.

Solution? It's too "complicated" to ship it back, so just re-order the original one...........

And you wonder where some of the money goes in the gov......

Well, the alternative would be for you to pay the cost of entering the return order, shipping the damaged goods back through the supply chain, segregating and tracking those goods so they are not accidentally shipped to a store as good stock, maintaining a repair department to fix the returned goods, identifying the necessary repairs at the repair department, determining spare stocks levels at the repair department and maintaining those stock levels, shipping spares, and finally putting the repaired goods back into the supply chain.

The decision to scrap something rather than to return it is usually based on costs. Don't underestimate the costs involved in distribution.

But in this case all of that would have been done for nothing as Billy pointed out there isn't anything wrong with it! If someone in the service department had simply taken a look at it (maybe 10 minutes tops at $12/hour for the guys salary) they would have realized the guy that returned it was wrong (or just lying to get his money back).

I find that the simpliest answer is usually the right answer and in this case, laziness prevailed over common sense.

speaking of grilling what is your speciality? I'm on my way out to pick up sometihng to bbq tonight as we speak. I love grilled swordfish, lamb chops, mmmm, corn on the cob...

I just have a slightly nagging worry that someone is going to be on the front of a paper with the headline 'Calgary resident sent airbourne by defective barbeque'

Good purchase though, although i am such of a tight bugger that I would probably hang around the skip till closing time... ;-)
