Another noteworthy soundalike is the intro to "Boots or Hearts" which sounds highly similar to John Cougar Mellencamp's "Pink Houses".

Actually, when I heard "Heaven" the first time live at the Whiskey in Calgary, I didn't think "American Girl" in particular. I more thought of that particular genre...new wave, post punk, whatever it may be called. Stuff like Tom Petty, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello...that sorta thing. It was refreshing at any rate.

I an even better "tribute" to American Girl is the Strokes' Last Night. I remember reading in an interview that they were surprised they were never sued.
