New PC Monitor Question. -
Lizard King - 03-23-2006
I bought a new monitor for my pc today. its a 17" flat screen. I used to have a 19" full size monitor it was soo bulky and heavy and it ate up most of my desk so I had to get a new one. Anyway so I hooked it up and to get the best resolution it said to set it at 1280x1024, but when I do that the picture is great but everything is small, when I view a webpage its right in the middle and on the left and right there is a big empty space. So I dropped the res. to 1024x768, that fills the screen up for the most part, and the pic quality is still very good but not great. Is this the way it is? Or can I make some adjustments to fill the screen and make things look larger at the highest resolution? Anyone?
Sorry if this is a dumb question, Im not monitor savvy I guess.

that's pretty much was you can expect to happen
at 1280 it puts more pixels on the screen - thus shrinking the size of the pixels, effectively giving you a bigger working area but also causing things to shrink
at 1024 there are less pixels on the screen but now they are larger

Cue Bruce Hornsby...
You'll get used to it...or not. It's a trade off. When I moved into 17" and 19" monitors the "resolution = reduced display" factor bothered me briefly but I got over it.
It's much easier to manage multiple windows which suits me fine, but use whatever resolution works best for you. A surprising number of people still prefer 800 x 600 so you're not alone.

Thanks guys. Ive settled on 1024x768, that seems to be the best for me. Once I get used to it, I should be fine.

If I remember correctly (sorry, it has been a while since I used a PC) but you can do
some things to compensate for the "smaller" look at 1280. (1) I think you can go to your start menu and if you right click on the start button, it should bring up an option (and I am sorry I can't remember the exact phrase) to change the "menu bar." It might actually say "options." But if you go in there, you can change the size of you icons from small to large. This will make the dock (or menu bar) look bigger.
(2) I think you can also change the size of the fonts in any of your browsers so if it will display larger.
Either of these might help you. I prefer a higher resolution because it is always better for multi-tasking with multiple windows. In better, I mean easier, at least for me.
I hope I helped and didn't just confuse you more? :?

 I understand. I made some changes already, bigger fonts and icons. If you go to control panel then to display, hit the apperance tab. Then if you click on the effects button you can make some changes there. I think if you change to clear type instead of standard it looks much better and its easier to read. thanks anyway! :thumb:

I recently noticed this, too. I'm at a res of 1600x1200, when i went to use a friends comp at 800, i could barely function. The higher res gives you so much more room to work. Maybe it's the difference between multi-taskers and single-taskers.

I work on twin 1280 x 1024 and have been working at that size for quite some time now, but I do remember when I used to think it was small. Now, I can't work at any other resolution.
You get used to what ever size you adjust to in the end. well, that's been my experience.
