I was doing my daily check of the cbc website and came across this article. Next thing you know The Homeland Security department is going to say he has terrorist links.

I feel for this guy; my uncle would be in pretty much the same situation if he tried to cross the border. The family tale goes he disappeared into the night insted of going back on another tour of 'Nam.

A lot of people deserted to Winnipeg; if you ask me, that's punishment enough (I kid, I kid).

Cheers,

Pat

i sort of feel for the guy, but he knew he did something illegal...surely he must have thought this could happen anytime he goes back down there

My question is, why did he try to re-cross the border if he knew there was the possibility of having his name pop up on the computer? From a UK Telegraph article : "The United States Army treats deserters as common criminals, posting them on "wanted" lists with the FBI, state police forces and the Department of Home Security border patrols." I've seen stories of Vietnam era soldiers who deserted who came back and not treated harshly, mostly those who came back because they had family in the States that they left behind and they had served one or two tours before having traumatic stress breakdowns and fleeing. I doubt Abney will get more than 5 years in military prison for deserting.

I think that it is just a shame that it would even come to that. A man that old going to Leavenworth for even "just 5 years". From my understanding Leavenworth is not a very nice place if only for a day. My only hope is that the states decides to take it easy on the guy and if time has to be served, than hopefully in a min security facility.
