GORDON DOWNIE
Battle of the Nudes
(MapleMusic/Universal)
****
I’ve spent so much time hating GD–his voice, his band, you name it–or at least disrespecting him, that I fear I may never adequately right the wrong, but here goes. Love it or hate it, there is no more distinctive voice (literally, his voice, and figuratively, the things he says with it) in Canadian rock ’n’ roll than that of Mr. Gordon Downie), and, at a point in his career where most rock stars feel more than content to take no chances and continually rehash the same old shit until their plane crashes or whatever, Gordie does not. Instead, he’s doing poetry books and hooking up with subterranean heroes like Dale Morningstar and Julie Doiron to make solo albums that are as quirky (and rocking) or more so than anything he’s done to this point. Fuck you, Don Cherry; if anyone deserves to have his likeness on a keg of beer in this country, it’s this guy. Sorry about all that mean shit I said, Gord. It probably won’t happen again.

Is Craig upset because he has missed out on years and years of great music?
