HIP song made into movie - patiodweller - 02-25-2006

Well, "The Sweet Hereafter" and "Men With Brooms" featured HIP music (and maybe the Milgard story did too, I never saw it) my post is simply this, if you could turn one HIP song into a movie, what would it be and why? [I guess the easiest or most obvious would be "38 Years" since you could begin the movie with the whole dramatic prison break scene and than rewind back to when "Micheal" was just a boy growing up in Kingston, the events leading up to the climax which is the events in the song and than of course end with him back in jail as the opening of "38 Years" plays as the end credits begin to scroll. ]

I once heard Jodie Foster and Peter O'Toole collaborated with The Hip on a project. Something about a lighthouse? Anyone?

Freak Turbulence

As patiodweller said, 38 Years Old lends itself to a movie pretty easily; other than that, I'm not sure. SoylentGreg's suggestion of Freak Turbulence could be made into a pretty good thriller/comedy.

A decent movie could probably be made based around the concept of "Locked In The Trunk Of A Car"

Except taking the lyrics and converting them into a movie may be a wee bit hard.

The Dark Canuck - an epic war movie built around the contrast between the psyche of a man in war and a man at home and how the two can coexist in the same mind. Subtext: the ambiguity of the Canadian mind when it comes to our desire to abase ourselves before the American empire, and our contrary desire to be 'peacekeepers' and universally loved.

Yeah, that would smoke.

Uh, Blow at High Dough.

A movie about a small-town kid caught up in making a movie about movie-making, while trying to stay one step ahead of his arch-nemesis, a taxi driver thrown into a murderous rage by an unfortunate incident of coitus interruptus. Both want to marry the same girl; she is non-committal, declaring that whoever fits 'er will eventually git 'er. The small-town kid is equally non-committal, but he can get behind anything. A more pressing concern is the souped-up taxi that chases him around the speedway oval. Why are they risking their lives, if neither one really cares? Existential ennui is writ large. It's never quite clear if it's an Elvis thing or an Ann Margaret thing, or where the narrative ends and the metanarrative begins. Rick Groen at the Globe gives it five stars. Nobody else gets it, but everyone loves the soundtrack.
