The Canadian music industry should be ashamed of themselves. This is easily the worst list of Juno noms I've seen in years. Those Canadian Idol jackasses received a whopping 8 nominations, while everybody's favorite band Nickelback got 6. The Single and Songwriter of the Year categories aren't too bad...but the rest of it is absolute garbage. I shudder at what the rest of the world thinks of our music scene when they read that list of nominees. We have so many incredible and talented bands/artists in this country making some of the most beautiful, unique, and original music in the world, and this is the only list the Junos could come up with?? What a joke. Canada's music scene will never get the worldwide respect it deserves if the industry doesn't put down the crack pipe and stop shining the spotlight on such god-awful music.

I think the majority of people on that list deserve a beating of some sort. We could start with the record executives and then work our way down.

Geeze. The rest of these lists reminds me of the days when Alannah Myles, Sass Jordan, Honeymoon Suite and Platinum Blonde were winning Junos <<shudder>>.

Nobody learned their lesson from Kelly Clarkson's Grammy success, I guess....
These awards are about marketing more than anything else. They sure as hell aren't about merit.
I look at it this way: the music biz is cyclic. It's a rotten and corrupt money-making machine that shoves pablum into the ears of people who aren't discerning enough about music to decide what they like all on their own.
Then, every few years, there's a revolution. The birth of rock and roll in the 50s blew away hackneyed commercial country. The 1960s counterculture destroyed an entertainment paradigm utterly out of touch with reality. The Sex Pistols and other punk vanguards destroyed the aging 70s easy listening pop of the baby boomers. Nirvana et al consigned 80s pop to the trash bin, where it so richly deserved to be.
Each time this happens, the honeymoon lasts only long enough for the money men to figure out how to package the phenomenon, neuter it, and commercialize it. And they proceed to progressively neuter it, pablumize it, and stuff it into their hapless victims' ears.
We are now in the neutering phase, with punk-pop, various disposable and interchangeable female singer/sex symbols, and Nickelcrap.
I think we are about due for the next revolution.

Oh, and while I'm beating that cynical drum, the very existence of "alternative" categories at the Junos is intended to marginalize alternatives to pablum.
There are, by definition, now "mainstream" awards and "alternative" awards. The idea is to make "alternative" a permanent category outside the mainstream, and to market it as such.

That is a god awful list of no-talent hacks if there ever was one...Skippy, I was just saying to some friends yesterday that the music scene is on the verge of a "Revolution", I actually used that word...and I don't think it can come fast enough.

How Neil Young isn't up for ALBUM OF THE YEAR of beyond me.
Actually, I don't think I've ever seen Gord Downie (The Hip) up for SONGWRITER OF THE YEAR either. Pretty strange, considering the fact that he's probably the best lyricist in the country.

Half this list looks like it was made by 16 year old girls. The Black Eyed Peas, Massari and Shawn Desmond aren't the best anything, no matter how many horribly tasteless teenagers request them to dance to. The Songwriter of the Year category is the only one that doesn't seem like a parody of itself.
Also, Blue Rodeo vs. Theory of a Deadman? How the hell did that happen?

Well, despite all the crap-assed nominations... if anyone wants a reason to watch the Junos this year, yours truly and the missus will be in the GA floor area right in front of the stage. Hmm... perhaps I should get a Hipbase shirt and hopefully get some face time on-camera in some crowd shots...
