this being one of the most popular internet hangouts for computer and music junkies i was hoping somebody would be able to help me out with .ogg files.

how do you work with them...? burn them...?

ogg isn't like FLAC or SHN; it's not a kind of compression. It's more like MPEG or Apple's Quicktime .mov files.

There are a number of programs that can work directly with ogg files - as linked above.

Hope that gets you going in the right direction.

aaaaah chris chris, i should've known you'd be the first on this one... i appreciate it.

i have them playing, turns out i have a media player codec or plugin or something that lets me play them... can i burn them straight as is or would i have to do something to them first?

You can burn them right away, but it depends on what you want to do with the burned disc. In order to play it on your standard CD player, you'll need to convert, decompress and then burn.
