Ryan Adams and the Cardinals - The Horrible Esthete - 01-22-2006

I just saw this band perform on Austin City Limits and loved it. I had never heard of him and his band before, but his stuff is right down my alley.

Anyone out there a fan, or familiar with them? I'd be grateful for your random thoughts, comments, background info, recommendations, etc.

I've discovered his music over the past few months, had heard about him before, but I'm hooked now

He released 3 records last year, haven't seen that done in a while, and all 3 are great if you like this type of music(alt-country,rockish sort of music)

I got Cold Roses(double album) from last year, I'd definately recommend that one...haven't heard the other 2 as much(Jacksonville City Nights and 29(which I got as well))

Jacksonville City Nights is brilliant. I don't have Cold Roses or 29 yet, but they're on my list. If you're new to his music, you might wanna check out his debut solo disc Heartbreaker, which I still think is the best thing he's ever done. His second album Gold is pretty damn good as well.

Yeah I love Heartbreaker too
and his Rock N Roll disc, shows he can do both, alt-country and rock n roll

He's had a bad rap in the "alternative country" press for being a little too in love with himself, but I think he's awesome. I saw the Austin City Limits myself last night on PBS - great stuff. Most of what he played was from Jacksonville City Nights. He recorded that and Cold Roses last year with the Cardinals, and "29" is solo. All three of them are great, but Cold Roses is my favourite. You won't be disappointed.

His 2002 album "Demolition" was a collection of demos that didn't make Heartbreaker or Gold and was still better than just about any album released that year.

If you had to buy one of the three albums from last year, go with 29 -- I think that's the best out of the three. That said, there's something special about an artist who could release three different records that are truly three seperate records. It's not like he was being self-indulgent (which he really often is). He's just that good.

In short, I guess I suggest getting everything. They'll be inexpensive at the right record store. Heartbreaker (2000), Gold (2001 -- featuring New York New York, his only real 'single), Demolition (2002), Rock and Roll (2003), Love is Hell pts 1 and 2 (2003), Cold Roses (2005), Jacksonville City Nights (2005), and 29 (2005).

Cheers

Pat

I find it pretty hard to keep up with all the stuff he releases but the stuff I have picked up is all great.

I've only picked up Gold and Cold Roses so far but have heard stuff from his other releases. Gold is a fantastic disc as is Cold Roses.
