well my ibook is right out of the game... kernel panics started happening after going for almost a month without any -- called up a place in london and they said to run the hardware test on loop mode overnight... so I did, and in the morning I had a 'memory access error' and she was frozen. Gave it a hard shut down and tried to boot it back up and all i got were 3 beeps and nothing else.... so I google "three beeps ibook" and low and behold DOA logic board

I'm just happy it happened now and not in 2 months when my warranty expires. The little guy will be off to London tomorrow for tasty new parts.

But the lesson learned from all this is that apple doesn't like third party ram - I had a stick of 512MB from an online store in my machine (which i removed at the same time the original kernel panics started cropping up) and from what i've read, that's all it takes to blow up the logic board... which is weird, but i guess apple just wants you to buy ram from them... not something I'm particularly keen on, but hey, what can i do about it, right...?

That's a real bummer. I just experienced something similar with my iMac G5 and some 3rd party RAM. My computer didn't like it one bit, and I was getting all sorts of strange errors. I removed the RAM, problem solved.

I actually had to try 5 different RAM chips before we found one that worked.
