Despite being painted as earth-wreckers, many conservatives like myself do foster a deep concern for all things natural. This is why I am here to raise awareness regarding the disturbing disappearance of a treasured member of our continent’s mammal population: the North American Beaver.
These warm, furry little creatures once thrived in great numbers across our fair land, but in recent decades, particularly in the early 1990s, numbers began dwindling. Today, even the most avid and resourceful naturalists are hard-pressed to find a single occurrence of this now reclusive specimen.
Today’s younger generation scarcely takes notice of the beaver’s disappearance, which at this present day, is all but complete. It is now difficult to detect even the slightest trace of a beaver, even in regions where beavers were once thick and dense. Beavers are now found only in small, sporadic patches, as modern society has apparently deemed it ‘desireable’ to rid itself of beavers altogether. Even when there is a sighting, the beaver itself is, almost without exception, much smaller and thinner than those that were commonplace as recently as 1988.
Am I unique in my lament of this all-but-forgotten natural treasure? Without the good old beaver around, the landscape seems much too blanch and barren. And boring. I already miss them. And I sure hope that beavers make a comeback before I am too old to continue venturing into its natural habitat, where it once flourished.

Do you have any data or stats to backup the claim that they are declining? I live in Nova Scotia Canada and our lakes and rivers are teeming with them. Where I go observing (astronomer) there are new beaver families showing up, more each year. I think I've counted 6 where there were none before.
While all species on our planet are in rapid decline, thanks to us humans, I don't think the beaver is hurting as much as other species are, but still, we should keep and eye on them regardless.

The dam-building critter isn't really what i'm talking about...its namesake, however, is definitely on a rapid decline, and this 'naturalist' isn't liking it.

When I were a lad there was beavers all over these parts.
Never could ketch 'em, though.
And now I miss 'em. As a wise woman once wrote:

well.. now that i know what you're talking about.. i have to say that my research does support your finding...... but i also completely disagree that it is something to be disappointed about.... perhaps its a new generation?

you certainly aren't alone... take a listen to "beauty queens" by pedro the lion (the artist who's album i display in my avatar)..... great song, but also shares some of your sentiment though somewhat more sarcastically
