A secret from a Liberal - Stephen Dame - 11-29-2005

Psst... just between us. I noticed "fear" has been coming up in the other political threads, so I figured I'd put this here.

I'll be working on a Liberal campaign beginning later today. I hope the Liberals win a majority government. I hope a Liberal PM is in place when the next Quebec referendum happens. I think Paul Martin's same-sex legislation, his stance on missle-defence, his action on Aboriginal and Health commitments and his economic stewardship have earned him re-election.

I don't fear Stephen Harper. I have confidence in the Constitution and the Charter. I think Canada's institutions and national ethic, or "values" as the papers say, are stronger than any one man. Harper would only be as radical as Canadians would let him, and that's not very much.

The idea of Jason Kenney and Stockwell Day in government angers me to no end, and I'll work my ass off through countless blizzards to make sure it doesn't happen, but it doesn't scare me.

And here's another secret: If Harper gets away from the "THEY'RE EVIL I TELLS YA!!" and sticks with a message of "I'm like you, I'm middle class, and I want to pay less taxes" he'll probably win. We're not running against Stephen Harper, we're running against "Throw the bums out/Time for a change."

I won't like Stephen Harper as PM, but I won't flee the country either. In fact, a new generation is needed. A new dynamic Liberal leader needs to emerge... and a brief spell in opposition may be just what the doctor ordered for us.

But that's just between you and me.

Dame, when are you running for the leadership of the Liberal Party?

Shhhh... Paul might hear you. Smile

Funny you should say that though. I'm tall, I can string two sentences together, I like politics the way most people like sports. More than a few times I've been asked "ever thought of running?"

Let me just say I should not be running anything but KM's. I think you should have something to offer, some life experience, some acheivable method of actually improving things before you put yourself up for election. I don't know if you can get that from newsrooms and University Poli-Sci.

I've got some classmates running this time around (one as a Conservative in Quebec!) and while I admire them, I wonder if at 25 years old you can be an effective representative?

What do you guys think? Has youth ever been a factor when you've voted? Would you think twice about voting for somebody from a party you like if they were really young?

"Most utterances of the word "dude" in an inagural address since Clinton"

If he was to win you'd be done school during his tenure, no? So you'd still have a chance to leave.

Why?

Perception, perception, perception......... I even heard someone tell me if Harper was PM, Employment Insurance would be done away with for good. I don't know where people hear these things but anyway....

- fingernailsonhull - 11-29-2005

I heard that if Harper was in power they would kill all the people in the hospitals to reduce wait times.
