Bass with a capo? Grace, Too Bass Tab - Muddy Memory - 11-22-2005

Just got the box and watched the silver jet video.

Anyone got any idea why Gord would rock that song with a capo? I play bass and I've never seen it, or seen a reason to do it. I'm sure there is one though. Perhaps, it's just because he's Gord, he wrote the bass line to Grace, Too and he can do whatever he wants.

Thoughts?

PS: thought I'd attach my take on Grace, Too intro for bass.
It's not what he plays on the album exactly but I think it sounds cool.
PLease let me know what you think

Gord has an affinity for droning the root note of a section in the background while he plays something else in higher registers. The capo allows him to drone the F# in most cases, while other elements are going on.

Other examples of this technique happen in Grace, Too, and Gus: The Polar Bear From Central Park.

You are definetly right.

He does spend a lot of time up the neck. I find it impossible to tab out his stuff because of it. There are so few songs where he confines himself to hammering out eighth root notes.

The droning technique doesn't show up until "The Last Of The Unplucked Gems" in their catalogue... and each album seems to represent an increase in bass complexity.

If you want to learn the songs by ear, concentrate on the upper registers, drone the key note as low as possible, and make adjustments where necessary. You'll find the most success that way, I believe.

Speaking of BASS,

If there is enough interest on the board, I'll tab out a few songs... I know chris chris wants his tab site to be complete... but if enough people would use it, I'll work on completing more tabs.

And, if you're interested, tell me which songs to start with.

I'm very interested in learning the riff in So Hard Done By, I've never tabbed out a song, I think it's one riff all the way through, there's a bass break at 2:59 so you can easily hear it.

Tabs - Muddy Memory - 11-26-2005

If anyone posted any bass tabs I would definetly use them. I'll do my best to add some as well. I realize that, especially in the more recent albums, Gord doesn't always follow a pattern. But if you just tab out, say, one verse and one chorus and intro and outro it would go a long way to helping people figure out the changes in the other verses and choruses. If that makes any sense...

songs I'd like to play:

scared (shouldn't be too hard)
heaven is a....
darkest one
all tore up

I just sent Chris "So Hard Done By"

check http://tabs.hipfans.com periodically to see if it shows up.

I'll do Scared, Heaven, Darkest, and All Tore Up later on this week, as time permits.

Hey, that's great.

I'm curious as to how you go about figuring them out. I guess I just start with the guitar chords and key of the song and do it bit by bit. Does anyone have a different system?

- schaggs - 11-28-2005

Well... I played bass for 7 or 8 years before I ever touched a guitar.... so if I sat around and figured out the guitar chords first, I'd never get any tabs done. Although, I suppose I use a similar technique..... figuring out root notes, and keys... and for something really difficult I'll figure out the first note of each bar all the way through the song first, and then the second note, etc.

But, I'm crazy... so my technique might not work for anyone else.

- Muddy Memory - 11-29-2005

No... that makes sense.

Thanks for the tab for "So Hard Done By" Anyone know how Gord get his tone in that song?

- schaggs - 12-09-2005

Most of Gord's tone comes straight from the fact that he played a quite high-end G&L bass on that song. The active electronics accomplish most of the sound.... but he's also quite heavily compressed on the recording......

If you're playing an active bass, try setting your tone to between 15 - 30% bass, and set a 3-band eq to 7Treble, 4Mid, 6Bass.

If you're using a passive bass, set your bass to about 30% treble and set a 3-band EQ to 5 Treble, 5Mid, 8 Bass.

Those are my best guesses as to how you'll replicate the tone. It works for my Stingray bass through a Fender BXR-60 amp and for my Samick custom shop (passive) through the same amp. Different basses and amps will have different settings.

Sorry about the delay on further tabs. I will add more soon.
