I HATE ITUNES - anorexicbadger - 10-20-2005

I forgot to uncheck the "Keep iTUnes music organized" box and now my wonderful beautifully organzied music collection has been reorganized beyond repair. I am incredibly bitter about this, especially since I have been unable to restore my old system by any method I have tried.

Anyone out there know how to reset file organization? Even system restore wouldn't help me.

Not a problem...

Move all of your music files to a new folder on your hard drive, "delete" them all from iTunes, click the keep organized box and then "import" all of your music files back into iTunes.

Voila! Everything should be organized again.

Of course this is all dependent on the fact that you filled in all the pertinent details on each of your MP3s (track name, artist name, album name, etc, etc)

Unfortunately I didn't enter all of the info for all of my mp3s...

What happened is that iTunes completely reorganized my music folder and created a massive system of folders which make it very difficult for me to find certain files unless I do it through iTunes or another program. This is irritating because I like to be able to access my files on my terms.

I'm not sure how moving them out into another folder would rearrange the folder system within my music folder, ubless there's something peculiar to iTunes that I'm not aware of (and that's quite likely), but thanks for the advice.

How do you want your files organized?

Put them into iTunes and enter all of the information for each track. After that, iTunes will put the songs into order, renaming then with a track number (if you chose that option) and then by album, and then by artist. It's a simple system, and it works great... if you enter in the complete information about each track.

And if you just seach via iTunes for the track you want, and then select it and hit Command+R (on the Mac) or Control+R (in Windows) it will open the folder containing the MP3 and highlight it.

I had a crazy system before - only had separate folders for artists if I had at least one of the entire albums on my computer, singles were all in the same folder and alphabetized by artist name - but it's what I was used to, and the change isn't sitting well with me yet.

I guess my two biggest problems are:

1) It lists bands as "The X". My old system had everything as "X, The" so I didn't have to worry about remembering which band attaches "the" to their name.

2) Compilations have been completely lost. I had a four disc collection of 80's underground music and now it's spread through dozens of folders by artist name rather than by the compilation that those songs were actually a part of.

I really have too many music files to go back and fix the info on all of them, so I guess I'll just have to deal with it. Thanks for the help though.

1) Edit all of the files (you can select all the files by each band at one time and edit multiple files at once) and change their name and remove the "The" or rename them as "X, The". You don't have to do them individually, so it isn't that time consuming.

2) If you edit the ID3 tag of the MP3 there is a check box for compilations that will keep them all together.

I wish had known all of this when I organized my files the first time. I had originally gone through and altered the file name of each one to make it fit my system. Stupid!

Anyone know why itunes has regional restrictions(from country to country)? Because I'm in the US my acount is only valid in the US store, can't buy from Canada or anywere else. Is there a way to get around that. You'd think they would want to sell to anyone interested!

copyright laws I assume, as with everything else, for example if you'd like to use Launch on Yahoo, and you're in Canada, you have to use the Canadian site.
