Anybody watch this last night? I thought it was great. The Edge doing "in the year 2000" was pretty funny, and the band was in top form.
My only complaint was that the credits started rolling about halfway through Vertigo and then NBC decided to cut them off just after the bridge. It was very annoying. "hmm...Carson Daly's show is starting, but we have the biggest band in the world playing right now. This is quite the dilemma, what should we do?? I guess we have no choice but to go with Carson."

As it was explained to me over at the O'Brien group, Lorne Michaels and Broadway Video actually own the show and have complete control over its content as long as the NBC S&P goons approve.
So, they get to put together 44 minutes of TV, no more no less... 44 minutes exactly, four nights a week, 40 weeks a year. NBC then airs what they've purchased. All content decisions are O'Brien's and his exec-prod: Jeff Ross.
It was their intent to have U2 play them off the air, so NBC didn't cut anything, it's just how the show was put together. IIRC correctly, the press release said 3 songs, so Vertigo was simply a bonus as the show faded to black.

Yeah, it was annoying. I liked how they transitioned into Vertigo from the ballad. Reminded me of hearing Johnny's drums kick in when the boys move from Bobcageon or Wheat Kings into Poets or Springtime. a "Yes, here we go" moment.
