Hip Album Ratings on allmusic - akoso - 08-21-2005

For any of you that don't know, <!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.allmusic.com">www.allmusic.com</a><!-- w --> is an INCREDIBLE site for getting discography, bios, reviews, etc. on any band that's big enough to play outside of their hometown. I was checking out the site the other day and thought I'd see how they rated the Hip albums (which they thought were their strongest). Ratings are given out of a total of 5 stars. These are the results:

EP - 2 stars
UTH - 4.5 stars
RA - 4 stars
FC - 4.5 stars
DFN - 3 stars
TATH - 2 stars
LBU - 2.5 stars
PP - 3 stars
M@W - 3 stars
IVL - 3 stars
IBE - 4 stars

I was glad to see that IBE got some respect. Although I love UTH, I was surprised that it received 4.5 stars, while DFN and PP only got 3. What do you guys think of the ratings?

BTW, if you check out the site, make sure you take a look at the pics... some great oldies. Also, for an extra chuckle, click on the Songs tab and see which songs they list under "Highlights". ABAC (okay), Blow (obviously), Bobcaygeon (of course), Butts Wigglin (naturally), Courage (yup), ... wait a sec... Butts Wigglin?!?

If allmusic is only giving DFN 3 and IVL 3, they must not have even listened to the albums. :roll: Who cares what allmusic thinks about the Hip anyway?

Come on. LK. If they all get 5 out of 5, what separates Led Zep IV, Blood on the Tracks, Exile on Main Street or American Beauty from the Hip's output?

5 out of 5 should be a classic.

EP-- 2.5 (listened to it last night for the first time in forever, it's pretty comical but i actually like some of it)
UTH-- 4.5 (classic Hip songs)
RA-- 4.5 (sweaty rock and roll greatness)
FC-- 3.5 (great songs that would sound better with diff production)
DFN-- 5 (brilliant album, underrated by most Hip fans IMO, mood of the entire album flows flawlessly)
TATH-- 4 (Gord's finest album poetically)
LBU-- 3.5 (took off points for not including entire concert, but very good show)
PP-- 4 (different sound, more layered, Poets turned into a brilliant live beast)
M@W-- 3.5 (some of my favourite Hip songs like Stay, MAW, Putting Down, Sharks, Freak Turbulence, Tiger the Lion but the phrase "caramelized onion" annoys me haha)
IVL-- 3.5 (Padgham's imprint was left on this record, spawned the immaculate "Good Life..", I like the songs but there seems to be a little energy missing, still a very good record)
IBE-- 4 (raw record filled with miscues and vocal malfuctions, has a real honesty to it and shows the band warts and all which is refreshing to listen to, still not as good as the masterpiece that was DFN)

Well if one person thinks DFN is a 5 and another person thinks its a 4 and another thinks its a 3.5 then who is right? Nobody its all subjective and based on personal taste and opinion. I love the Hip they are my all time favorite band, my absolute number 1! So I love all the albums and to me they are classics (except the EP, I like it, but it aint no classic..lol) Just my opinion Skip, some may agree some may not, to each is own. But if you want to get into a comparison thing, well I think LedZepIV is a better album than TATH, and I could go on comparing albums to albums but its not something I bother with. But I see your point. :thumb:

Awesome! Here's mine

EP-2. Signs of things to come, but come on....
UTH-4. As a "debut" album it is the shnizzle...as good as Van Halen I in my book. I must have been so much fun to make.
RA-4.5 The album the introduced me to the band...a country tinge with a sharp cutting edge. made us true fans.
FC-4.5 Epic...couldn't get enough of it...made us see the light.
DFN-5 mellow...but more intricate and thought provocing...their swan song in my book.
TATH-4.5 for me it still gets played more than most, a few questionable songs takes it down a notch.
PP-5 wicked sound...
M@W-5 a masterpiece...
IVL-4.5 solid from start to finish...my favorite singles...
IBE-3 I like it, but it rarely gets the play time as some others...perhaps in 5 years it will get the respect it deserves.

I judge a band by the big picture...and I still give them a 10!

I read the reviews... they were interesting, but they were all written by different people, so it's difficult for me to take them as a cohesive picture of what the people who run the site think of the Hip. The one guy who wrote the TATH and PP reviews seems to have a negative view of their studio material as a whole, so it's a little harder to swallow those particular rankings with that bias intact.

I think the site should have asked all the different reviewers to listen to all the albums and write reviews on them, and post them on the site. That way people could read many different views on the albums, which would help people judge for themselves.

But I suppose it doesn't matter as much to devoted fans like us. Face it, we like the Hip, period. Some of us can objectively criticize their work, but not all of us can. I think many of us would tend to agree with favourable reviews and use them as justification that our feelings are correct, while ignoring or ridiculing unfavourable reviews.
