I really don't come around to these forums often enough for as big a Hip fan that I am. I've been sitting here streaming the Live 8 Poets video over and over again cause it's just so friggin amazing.

I do live in Winnipeg here, and I'd like to comment on their Juno performance....and other stuff.

It was...amazing. Except for the fact that Gordie was obviously sobering up a bit Tongue

, and his voice seemed a bit off, a bit scratchy or something. But whatever, the mic bit at the end did it for me "you think you can make it on your own!?! You wouldn't last FIVE SECONDS!"

I noticed all the Candian idol rejects at the front were all pretty content. I'm sure they were all like "....". Nobody really seemed into it, you know? Probably cause it wasn't an arena full of Hip fans, but still. I think a lot of non-hip people just viewed it as "strange", that's what my mom said, and my dad just shook his head at me as I was pressing rewind on the VCR Tongue

My other pseudo-fan-friend said thatt their performance was "awful", and so I told him that for the next show I'm getting him a ticket way at the back, upper deck Tongue

A lot of those naysayers, I think, just expect them to walk on, sing their song and walk off. But it just wouldnt be a Hip performance with some random ranting, mic bit, screeching, dancing, leg-kicking, jumping, sign-language Gordie.

What they do on stage is a lost artform in the world of rock. I feel bored after watching the Foo Fighters, Green Day, or any modern rock band like that, they walk up and play, stand at the mic play guitar and sing. Theres no....CONTENT, you know? Nothing that really defines the band, makes their live performance stick out. I think that's what keeps me coming back to the Hip, for that old-school performance.

For a band as big as they are to come into the Junos...man watching the red carpet stuff, I don't think a single person said they were excited to see the Hip perform :| Billy noTalent and Sum 41 are too busy basking in the fame of pop rock to care it seems. Ah well.

On the subject of ranting I come to a Winnipeg DJ for Power 97, Wheeler, who I have come to hate. Upon release of Vaccination Scar he said something like "this is the worst Hip song ever" or something, and that "Gordie has to drop his guitar and someone has to take his weed away from him". More like somebody has to fire your ass...Gus, Summer, Scar, Nashville and Makeshift are some of the most awesomest tunes ever. So screw you, Wheeler, you can go home and pretend like Fully Completely was their last album if you like. ...Aahhh that felt good to rant about Wheeler Big Grin

About the Weakerthans...(amazing band, if you ever get a chance to see them)...they played a show here at The Pyramid about 4 days after the Hip show here. John K. Samson was quoted in the thursday Winnipeg Pree Press Tab "I would give almost anything to play with The Hip". Whaddya know a week later the Weakerthans were on the new year's bill. Way to go John!

I mentioned the Poets video before...just...awesome. All three of those songs were awesome! But they totally stuck it out for Poets, watching it felt like I was right there at a Hip show.

I turn 19 in...several days, and for a b-day present I'm getting the Ottawa show from Live Downloads. I can't wait.

It never stops amazing me how I can listen to Grace Too (my fav song by FAR) like once a day, sometimes more, every day, and have it never, ever, ever grow old. Same with all their music, it seems like it's timeless. There's never a dull moment where you "get sick" of listening to it or anything. Those 11 albums never leave my car.

And there really isn't a better feeling than showing someone else the Hip, and getting them into their music. I just did that recently with someone I met on the internet....lives in San Fran, I sent a couple songs on MSN, then she spent all day today looking high and low for a CD...after going to like 15 places or something, she found Trouble at the Henhouse...for...*get this every Canadian who's reading this*...Twenty. Dollars. I was like "I've never paid more than $12 Canadian for a Hip album, ever". Of course, she didn't believe me...shame.

My favorite classic Hip moments of all time...

The "shriek" in Grace.
The "Tell me! Don't tell me! Ok! Tell me!" intro to Poets.
8 minute concert renditions of Blow at High Dough.
The Gordie spinorama.
The "stare-at-the-crowd-smile-and-wait-for-a-reaction".
The long-note-hold-and-handwaveshake.
The I-only-shave-every-three-days look.
How they all walk on like normal people, not in suits and ties trying to impress someone by looks.
The Gordie toque. Purely Canadian. Period. Big Grin

The "Gordie guitar", at least that's what I call it. Just a smaller acoustic guitar.

But yeah, that's my big..."Hip Blog" I think I called it or something. It's great to sit here and read stuff from people that live and breathe Hip like I do.

And just a note on the "We Are The Next Us" poem-speech...I read after the Junos an article by Bartley Kives (Winnipeg Free Press music guy) that commented on the poem-speech. Apparantly it was derived from part of a Sloan song, or a Sloan interview or something. I can't remember the article much though.

Love your post, but I have to comment on your assertion that Billie Joe of Green Day just stands at the mic and sings. Simply not true. I'm not a huge fan of theirs but saw them at the Saddledome a few weeks back and they put on a GREAT, GREAT show. High energy, lots of running around, gets the fans involved, etc. I was really impressed because I wasn't expecting much.

With respect to the "We Are The Next Us"/Sloan issue, Sloan has a line in "Coax Me" that goes "It's not the band I hate, it's their fans". It's rumoured to be about Hip fans as Sloan didn't appreciate playing to fans screaming "HIP! HIP! HIP! HIP!" back when they opened for the Hip. Though I'm not sure this has ever been confirmed.

Ok, then I guess I have to take that back. I've never seen Green Day live, just on TV and stuff, and they do exactly what I described on TV, so naturally I assumed they did that in concert as well. Apparantly not.

It was because of said reference that my group of otherwise well behaved Hip Heads, chanted "Hip-Hip-Hip" with great glee at Sloan during Edgefest 2003.

I don't hate Sloan's music, I just don't like them.
