One Year Ago Today... - Mr. Lahey - 06-29-2005

In Between Evolution was released to us Hip fans. After having one full year to listen and reflect on this album, it is truly one of the best of the Hip's catalogue.

Let this be the IBE appreciation thread...

- Lizard King - 06-29-2005

Its definitely one of the best [imo] Id rank it top 3 for sure. Love this album Im not so crazy about SIKU or Heart of the Melt. But most of the albums songs are some of my all time favorite Hip tunes now, mainly:

One Night In Copenhagen-Love the rhythm of this song and the lyrics
New Orleans Is Beat-Took me a while to really appreciate it, but now I cant stop listening to it
Vaccination Scar-One of the bands best rockers
Gus-Just the opening is enough to knock you back, great fun song

Meanstreak, Everywhere, Family, Joe and Nashville all great songs as well. Top to bottom one of the Hip's best for sure. I still wish Night Is Forgetting was on it but hey I cant complain, I have the song on my iTunes. What I like most about IBE is that it shows the band is evolving and going in the right direction and they are showing no signs of letting up, you some people want to say its a comeback album after IVL and M@W I dont agree with that notion, but thats just because those albums didn't get the credit they deserve, but I love the new songs and I hope they keep it going for years, I think the band has almost hit its peak with this album so its a sign of great things to come Im sure. :thumb:

I also love the album. Definitely in the top 3 for me!

It's funny though, Heart of The Melt and SKU are two of my favourites off the album. It took me a long time to 'get' SKU. But now I absolutely love it! And Heart of the Melt has been a favourite since my first listen.

If the new album (next spring) is anything like IBE we will all be very lucky!

After having a year to fully digest IBE, I'd have to say it's one of the best albums of their career so far. 13 beautifully crafted songs of pure rock n' roll bliss, bursting with energy and some of the best lyrics Downie has ever penned. And I absolutely LOVE the raw, live-off-the-floor production by Adam Kasper. For a studio album, this is as close to what the band sounds like live as you're gonna get. Downie mentioned in an interview last year that they liked the experience so much, that they're planning on working with Kasper again on their next record. I hope that's true!

I was thinking about that this morning. 1 year ago today I was at the Mod Club for one awesome night!!!!!!!

- NMAS - 06-29-2005

I like the album, but it doesn't find its way into rotation at my house very often, my taste's are wandering elsewhere I guess. I'm sure it will come back

- Gotcha - 06-29-2005

Love the album and colabaration of great songs. Putting it on tommorow for the tribute!

- chicagoblackhawks77 - 06-29-2005

I thought about that too! Was going to post Happy-B Day IBE!!! Nice one Mr. Lahey, you drunk bastard!!!! Top 3 albums for sure.

Mick

Cheers to Heart of the Melt

May it find its way into a setlist of a show im at...and may it be followed by fire in the hole...

somehow to me those tracks seem like brothers.

- scottitude - 06-29-2005

I love the album, and it finds its way into heavy rotation at my house very often, my taste's aren't wandering elsewhere I guess. I'm sure it will continue to be one of my all-time favorites.

I couldn't resist.

IBE is pure, quintessential Hip! It's the only album that truly gives an unitiated listener a panoramic taste of the frantic snarls, ethereal ponderings, brilliant wordplay, countervailing guitars, and every subtle nuance that is The Hip.

No matter what "kind" of music one prefers, IBE has something for everyone! :thumb: :thumb:

- The Darkest Canuck - 06-29-2005

for me it's all about, Gus, Scar, Nashville, Makeshift and Josephine...i never used to be much of a fan of INOIB, but it's grown on me a bit since, and now i don't really mind it at all.

- j-monster - 06-29-2005

I also have a lot of love for IBE.

I wish I could have heard them do Copenhagen live... it's got a great rhythm and melody to it as LizardKing said.

I know I'm going to make sure I have this CD on hand to enjoy during the long weekend!

I don't think it's as good as DFN but it's pretty good. I like the record as a whole, but some things jump out at me. The pure dementia of "Summer" and "Gus" is pure bliss. Like someone mentioned in another thread, the "F##K YOU" attitude of Gord and the boys by leaving in mistakes is very nice. So what if Gord goes off key once in a while. The measure of great art is passion and creativity and soul. Downie and the boys have it. Young has it. Dylan has it. Lightfoot has it.

- Killer Whale Tank - 06-30-2005

I agree with the Miles Davis philosophy: mistakes are just part of the music. Nice to see the Hip reaching a level of maturity and confidence where they aren't afraid to leave the mistakes ON. All my favourite artists (Dylan, Tom Waits) do that.

Not an album with two or three brilliant 'singles' like FC. Merely a record chock-full of terrific, intense, muscular, smart songs---the only weak tracks in my book being Heaven and the groovy but tuneless Copanhagen. Its consistency somehow makes me think of 'Blood and Chocolate,' a similiarly tough and energizing blast from Elvis Costello at about the same point in HIS career. And it's the consistency that makes it so enduringly listenable.

Let me pitch a word for 'Mean Streak.' That one could slide easily on DFN, with its sense of menace and mystery.

'Makeshift'---the Lost Single. With the vocals pushed higher in the mix, it might been a big hit for them IMHO.

Finally, 'Yer Everywhere.' What a lyric, what an impassioned vocal, what chord changes.

I could go on, but we've all praised Gus, Josephine, etc., til the cows come home.

My verdict, for what it's worth: best after DFN. :thumb:

It is definately in my top 3 as well. I can still listen to that album from start to finish without skipping over any tracks. It is just a solid, rockin' album. I still repeat Makeshift about 3 times before I continue on ...I don't think I will ever tire of that song. And I think Josephine is the most perfect way an album has ended ever. That is just one hell of a beautiful song.
