Your favourite drumming in Hip songs - Mr. Lahey - 06-28-2005

What songs feature the best drum work in your opinion?

I handful that I like:
Cordelia
Summer's Killing Us
You're Everywhere (for the crashes)
Lake Fever (crashes are great again)
Poets (simple but cool)
Something On
Nashville
Dark Canuck

I could name about 35 probably because Johnny Fay is always solid, but that's my list. Yours?

I don't know what "best drumming" means, so I'll go with the drumming I like the best.

Vapour Trails...especially love the hollow drumming at the very beginning

Thompson Girl...simply because it is so unlike any other Hip song

So Hard Done By...I just like it

By best I mean what you like the most lol

Use It up
Dire Wolf
Grace too
Fire in the hole

Thugs is pretty awesome, and I love the intros to Fireworks and 700 ft. Ceiling. The live drumming of Ahead By A Century is awesome as well, and how could you not mention Grace Too, that thundering bass to start the song is great. I also really like the sublte beat of Are We Family.

For sure, the intro and basically all of Grace. The middle section of Fireworks has a lot going on, and Johnny nails it. Fire in the Hole when Gord extends the intro is great as well. The Last/DireWolf sequence worked well in '02 because of the drumming. I think Johnny is really underappreciated as a drummer. I used to think before that if you could remove anyone from the band and not really miss them he would be it, but I don't believe that anymore. He really fills in the gaps at live shows with little fills and rolls, and has come a long way since the early shows, where back then his main function was just to hold a beat and keep time. Now he certainly is a key ingriedient, as they all are. They can never be replaced and keep going as The Hip. He is no John Bonham or Neil Peart, but has his own place in the drumming world.

Are You Ready
Fire in The Hole
Thugs
Nautical Disaster (simple, yet perfect for the song)
IOD
Summer's Killing Us
Use It Up
The Bastard
Music at Work

I actually think Johnny does some great work on IVL. Are You Ready and Use It Up are great drum tracks IMO. Like Chives said, Johnny's main focus is keeping time but live he improvises a lot more than on record. Also, his live drumming is better because of the sheer power he drums with.

Can't believe I forgot On the Verge....even back in 91 that song live was incredible to listen to. Machine gun rolls, just awesome! Keep up the great job Mr. Fay.

- lilbones - 06-28-2005

My holy trinity would be Poets, Nautical, Grace and Vapour Trails.

And yes, I'm aware that's four.

- das_hips - 06-28-2005

I think his best work is on 'Music @ Work', so as 'best' drumming goes I'd pick:

- Train Overnight
- The Completist's
- Wild Mountain Honey

His best sound is on Road Apples, and the auxillary percussion on Day For Night is pretty damn good too... he's a really solid drummer

- fingernailsonhull - 06-28-2005

I am in no way trying to begin a bash Johnny thread. He is not a solid drummer. Screw ups are apparent even in the studio version of songs (the triplet fill near the end of Bobcaygeon). However, this is not to say that he doesn't have his great moments. Personal favourites:

The end of ATHM
Fireworks
Heaven

- Chris Tanz - 06-28-2005

blow
poets
gus

I pretty much never pay attention to drums. No matter how talented a drummer is, when it comes down to it all the person is doing is hitting something with a stick. There is nothing pleasant about drums in themselves.
