Sloan Greatest Hits CD/DVD - MikeS - 05-05-2005

Picked up "A Sides Win", Sloan's Greatest Hits CD/DVD compilation today and I have to say, I was blown away by the contents...

Besides the 14 classic tunes and 2 new tracks on the CD, the DVD contains: i) videos for the 14 "Greatest Hits" tracks...ii) a "Documentary" section where the band talks about the genesis of each video...iii) a "TV/Live" section with either a TV pull (MM, CBC or the like) or boot video of ALL 14 tracks...and iv) an "Extras" section, with alternative versions of some videos as well as the video for one of the new tracks "All Used Up"...

This is a MUST HAVE for any Sloan fan...

I can only hope the Hip's "Greatest Hits" compilation CD (DVD?) comes close to this, content-wise...

Interesting... I like Sloan a lot, but I wasn't sure I was going to pick up this compilation because I didn't think it would be worth my while. Based on your review I may have to change my mind and look into this.

I wasn't going to pick it up either (I have their entire catalogue to date), until a friend told me about all the "bonus" stuff on the DVD...I figured it was worth the risk at $15.99 (or less)...

Oh yeah, and the CD is enhanced as well...

Hopefully, someone with the Hip's management group is listening...this is a perfect example of how you sell a Greatest Hits disc to a fan who has everthing... :thumb:

I can back up the sentiments from above. I think especially for a casual fan, like myself, it's a great buy, a live version of all the songs on the dvd, as well as the videos themselves. Even if you own all the albums, it's a decent purchase, the dvd is quite interesting.

Agreed - this is a great collection to have. The DVD is just a great piece of work too...worth every penny.
Can't wait to see these guys live on the 14th for the first time! Anyone else checking them out on this tour?

btw who would buy just the cd for 14.99 when you get the it plus a dvd for an extra 3 bucks????

I stopped into Best Buy this morning and picked up the CD/DVD combo for just $15.99! And I've got to say that it is a fantastic package that does a great job of showcasing what Sloan is all about.

I also like the Extended Version of the documentary. At various points throughout the documentary a little boombox shows up on screen; if you press the select/enter button, it takes you to an in depth look at whatever the topic on screen is, and then returns you to the point you left.

Fingers and toes are crossed that The Hip's package blows this one away!

Just got mine too yesterday and ya its great! didn't get the dvd though in my package, and i didn't notice it was copy protected. Is there a way i can side step this? for a copy for the car, i heard 1 time people have used a black marker? is this true?

does your guys and gals packages come with the cd with the songs and the dvd separate or is the whole thing on 1 disk? because when i tried to burn it a screen popped up saying i had to download something to access something, sorry its too too early for proper english....

Mine came with two discs: 1 DVD and 1 CD.

I'm pretty sure the CD is enhanced, although I haven't had a chance to check it out.

yeah, the cd is enhanced but there's really nothing on there, just an application to download the songs to your pc.

this is how the hip package has to be done, there's no way i would have purchased this for just 2 songs. i don't buy the support the band argument, i think owning someone's entire back catalogue is support enough! great buy with the dvd extras though :thumb:

I have always found Sloan intoxicatingly catchy, yet I've never really given them a good listen. Would this disc be a good place to start?

In a word, "Yes."

It is a great retrospecitve on their career, and it showcases all of the things that make Sloan great. As well, it is a fantastic value.
