hey folks .. kinda noobish thread ... anyways, I've never been an autograph seeker, especially of porfessional athletes. i've always been around them due to my father's profession and my involvement with the game of golf.

The only two people I have wanted to meet, and have them autograph something for me are Gord Downie, and Jack Nicklaus. I met Jack this winter, and asked him for some advice and he signed for me. a class act.

soooooooo... I have a few beatiful shots of Gord, a few from a Vancouver 99 show, and a few from the fabled Stephen Dame. i'd love to meet Gord some time and get him to autograph one for me and one for my brother. an equal devotee to the HIP.

I've seen his autograph for sale on e-bay but that doesn't appeal to me. Anyone with any interesting stories on getting his signature, or meeting him? any tips for me? where could I find him hanging out? ahaha.

I dont really have solid answer, Id love to meet the Hip too, but most of the time people meet him by chance it seems, or because they are backstage. I think in the US is a good way to meet the Hip, they play those small venues and dont have to run and hide. Other than that he lives and Toronto and I assume he buys his own groceries and hits the town once and a while. Just have to be in the right place at the right time I guess.**shrugs**

I met the band after the second night on the IVL tour in Winnipeg. We just hung out by the tour bus for about an hour after the show and they came out and said hi to everyone and signed everything. It's probably easier to meet the band that way when they play smaller venues as opposed to arena shows in Canada.

I got a few really good pics with Gord that I can post if anyone wants to see and I got the IVL 2002 tour poster signed by the whole band minus Johnny. Gord signed it "Ryan's show 2 night" which I thought was a cool way of personalizing it.

I met Gord this past October. Just go find the tour bus at the venue, be careful because the crew had their own during the US tour, but find the hip's tour bus after the show and plant yourself there.

I have a funny story to add to this.
Landmark Theatre, Syracuse has been my best spot to meet the band after a show. While waiting in a crowd of other adoring fans, I notice Gord D making his way quickly through the crowd. Fearing I would miss my turn to speak to him, I shout out, Hey Gord do you remember (so and so) He stops, takes a minute to search his memory. Meets my eyes square on and answers yes, yes I do, with a lovely smile. I had his undivided attention and so starting shaking in my boots, now what! But it was easy to chat with him. He was very gracious to all of his fans, and doesn't seem to mind signing autographs.
I'm sure if you plan to meet Gord, it will happen for you.

I met him in Ottawa in 2002 when he did a poetry reading at the National Library. After the show he was out in the lobby signing copies of Coke Machine Glow and talking with fans. My friend and I chatted with him for a good 5 minutes or so. He's seriously one of the nicest guys I've ever met. Very cool, down to earth, and gracious towards his fans. You don't meet too many rock stars like that.

I met Gord when he was performing solo at the Calgary Folk Music Fest. There was 10 or so Hip fans waiting for him after his set (for almost 2 hours). The security guards were being a-holes, telling us that Gord has left, we're gonna call cops if you guys dont leave etc.. Then his manager came out - kinda surprised to see us and said "hang on folks, Gord is still here". Shortly after Gord came out talked to each and every one of us - signed stuff(he signed my Coke Machine Glow book). He hung out for about 15 min, made sure every one was happy before he left - truly a class guy.

I've heard stories about security guards being jerks about waiting for the band. I've also been told to just tell them "We set this up in advance" and they'll let you stay.

I was one of those people...I probably met you. I was there with my then girlfriend (now wife) and there was no way in hell I was leaving when I knew Gord was there despite what security was saying. The only person who's name I remember meeting there was Nick, the dude from Vancouver who drove out for the show. I thought it was quite funny, and a bit pathetic, when Billy Bragg came out to sign autographs, assuming all of us were gathered there to see him, and nobody went forward to get the autograph. I was actually embarrassed for him.

That was the only time I met Gord...he scribbled out Coke Machine Glow and wrote "Bill's Words".

Ha - thats cool, he did the same to my book - he crossed out Coke Mackine Glow and wrote "Joe's Book"
I forgot about the Billy Bragg thing - that was too funny!! :lol:

I love it when he does stuff like that. I had forgotten to bring my copy of CMG to the poetry reading, and the only thing I had for him to sign was the program for the event which read "An Evening with Gord Downie, in conversation with Ken Babstock". So Gord crossed out Ken Babstock and wrote my name so it read "Gord Downie in conversation with Casey". It was great.

Landmark Theatre, Syracuse I go with my brother and a friend. We hang around. Only set of autographs I've ever gotten (or wanted to). I'm nervous around Downie but I am wearing the most outrageous jacket I bought at a second hand store (I'd describe it if possible, hand embroidered vines ... real hippy stuff). Downie says "nice jacket" and signs "Enthusiasm Conquers all, Gord Downie" I've taken this advice to heart many times over.

I've met Mr Downie and the boys on numerous occasions, after shows, etc, but when we waited for him after his solo show in Sept 93, outside the Marquee Club here in Halifax, he signed our copy of Coke Machine Glow: "Rory and Brandy- enjoy the orange"

Can you just imagine, if GD knew that it was something he mentioned to you that inspires you to do what you do? What a feeling of proud that must be!!

I personally have never met him, but my girlfriend saw him at Ottawa for his Coke Machine reading.

He wrote on the first page "Kathy Power".

Sometimes I want to steal that book..... Wink
