IVL appreciation thread - opiated - 04-18-2005
with all this talk about M@W lately, i thought i'd revisit the other album that seems to get dogged quite a bit around here..i really don't find the production all that bad on this disc like some do...i used to..but upon listening to it again the other day on the way to work (about an hours drive), i was really getting into it... one cannot deny the sheer brilliance of the last 2 songs..dire wolf, and dark canuck...silver jet, granted has never found itself live, but on the disc i think it's perfect...darkest one is just so damn catchy, as is beautiful thing...leave is one hell of a trippy journey, good life is beautiful, and use it up is a better stones song then the stones have done in years...throwing off glass is such a personal insight into gord as a father, i find it touching and amazing he would let us in like that...just my 2 cents

I was really impressed with IVL it was a great follow-up to M@W and it really showed the band hadnt taken a career dip, not that I thought they did, but it seemed that way to many. I really enjoy The Darkest One its such a fun rockin song, and I love Throwing Off Glass, such a beautiful song. Top to bottom a real solid effort its got some great rockers and great slow songs its a good mix. Silver Jet seems to be getting a bad rap, but the band seems to enjoy playing it live, and I enjoy it live more than the album, Leave is a great song and Good Life is a classic, just like ABAC. I think Ill go listen to it now!

this album didn't grab me by the shorthairs till i seen it live. after that
i loved the album. "throwing off glass" is the only tune i could do without. as with all hip albums {except henhouse} everytime i go back and listen to it i;m just wowed and wonder why i waited so long.
silver jet is the killer tune on the album that i really enjoy live.
"it's a good life....." is the hit but when it comes down to a live performance "silver jet" takes it hands down.
thats just my opinion........i could be wrong. {DM}

a great album with unfortunate choices for single releases (at least states wide). The last half of the tracks vs the first half sound very different to me. It was like they made two lp's- one for the execs and one for themselves. All in all a very solid album full of listenable...sp? songs. The dark canuck and Leave are brilliant and should rank up there with their best. I for one cannot stomach it's a good life, but I love all tore up...go figure.?

Eventhough I have been a fan since the late 80's IVL was the first Hip album I have ever owned. There was a time I could listen to it over and over again and it's got some great stuff on it but since I now have the rest of the hip albums IVL is much different for me now.
However, Good Life will always have a special place in my heart. That entire album helped me through a bad time in my life and it has the autographs in it from the Clifton Park show:-) I love my copy of IVL!

Well, Gord's lyrics seem to be in recovery mode on that CD, beginning to restore themselves after the unfocused abstractions of M@W. But there's still glitches, e.g., the overly precious opening verse of 'Dire Wolf,' the overwriting in the chorus of 'Throwing Off Glass,' etc.. And they should have done something better with 'All Tore Up,' while 'Use It Up' strikes me as a mistake from start to finish.
But this is the APPRECIATION thread, so let me say---IVL is a decent-to-strong album marred mainly by terrible production. It's a danged shame, that (and in this respect akin to Fully Completely, only without songs as self-evidently tremendous as 100th Meridian, Wheat Kings and Trunk, and with worse production). But as songs, yeah, a lot of the stuff on that record stands up.
Was this an 'appreciation' or not? I give up

On June 11, 2002 I went to Ireland with my girlfriend at the time, for a 16 day vacation. On the way to the airport, I made my ride stop at Sunrise Records so I could buy the CD before I left. Our plan for Ireland was to rent a car and tour the island. I made a bunch of mixed CDs and then had 2 commercial CDs (OK Computer & IVL). The Fiat that we rented didn't play burned CDs, so all we listened to was IVL & OK Computer. Everytime I put it on, all of the memories from that trip come rushing back.
Because of this, my thoughts about the album are very jaded. The trip was phenomenal, and IVL was definitely the soundtrack highlight.
The Darkest One ranks as one of my all time faves, as do Dire Wolf/Dark Canuck.

i think this is the most underappreciated album they've ever released, usually when the hip release a new disc, it's a really big deal, but with IVL it seemed like nobody really cared, i mean, the singles got decent airplay, but it really wasn't the smash that it should've been. Darkest One, Dark Canuck, Dire Wolf, Leave, Silver Jet, some of their best material IMO, i absolutely love it, it's got all of the imagination and adventure of M@W but with a bit more focus and sense of direction, they really seemed to know exactly what sound/vibe they wanted with it, and they nailed it, not to mention, i think it's got the best cover art of any of their albums IMO.

I don't think I can add much to that. I think Mr. Baker's little guitar solo in Beautiful Thing is my favourite moment on the record. Not really technical guitar playing but like most of his playing, it just oozes feeling.
Silver Jet is decent on the record. I don't like all the voice overdubs but it's still decent. When it's played live, the music is good but since Gord messes the lyrics up so bad I can barely tolerate it. That kind of bothers me when they play Locked live also. Gord's memory losses can be forgiven most of the time but sometimes I find myself listening to a song just waiting for him to screw the words up.

I haven't listened to IVL in a while... I'll put it on again soon to get re-acquainted.
My impressions of the disc... Leave is full of quirky goodness, Throwing off Glass is beautiful, It's a Good Life is good on the disc but phenomenal live while Silver Jet is the opposite... overall the disc is solid all around.

I actually boycotted the Junos the year ivl came out because i couldnt believe they didnt get any nominations...especailly when the olp cd got a nom, and i heard part that and thought it reall shit the bed.
(I actually dont really ever watch the junos...but that year a made it a point not to watch)
IVL is one of my fav hip cds...i bought it the day it came, i am a card carrying hip club member :oops:
I really enjoy the darkest one, beautiful thing, and the dark canuck...

IVL is one of my favorite Hip albums. It's definitely a tighter, more focused record than it's predecessor. Leave, Dire Wolf, Dark Canuck, Good Life, The Darkest One, Silver Jet, and A Beautiful Thing are all stellar tunes that in my opinion are just as good as anything in their catalogue. I've heard people bitch about Hugh Padgham's production on this album, but I think it suits the material beautifully. Sure it's a little more polished and the guitars have a bit too much of a sheen on them, but at least Johnny's drums don't have that plastic-spork-hitting-mashed-potatoes sound that they had on Fully Completely. Padgham definitely knows how to record drums. Don't forget, this dude was famous for working with The Police on their biggest albums. Listen to IVL and Synchronicity back to back and you'll notice they have a similar production sound. The only difference being that IVL sounds a little more "full", probably because of the use of more modern technology. Technically speaking, this album also stands as Gord's best vocal performance in the studio to date. He doesn't hit a single bum note on the entire thing, and his voice sounds very strong and well-rested. He's truly in top form on this disc.
Having said all that, I still like Adam Kasper's production on IBE the best. I was ecstatic when Gord mentioned that they'd be doing another album with him.

Agreed. And it suits the vibe of the record perfectly. Robby did a beautiful job on that one. Which reminds me, did anybody here purchase one of his original lithographs? I wanted to get one, but I couldn't afford it at the time.
