Since Canada borders New York and we have many New Yorkers on the board I wanted to make you all aware of this interesting new law on the books.

If you are traveling on the interstate or any four lane divided highway and a State Trooper has someone pulled over and you are able to pull into the passing lane and you do not, or if you can't and you don't slow down, you can get a ticket. It's considered a 'nuisance ticket'.

Just wanted to give you all a heads up if you're traveling in New York State.

No, it's not. I'm sure the cops were sick of getting hit by cars. It's not ridiculous, it's a basic safety issue.

I'm really on the fence about the whole thing I agree with both of you. I've noticed how the troopers now park with their left-side tires on the solid line where the shoulder starts.

It's really sad that we live in a world where they have to make that law!

Disagree. This is a riddiculous law. No law should be based on opinion. That is to say, who makes the descision if the passing car could have changed lanes or not? It's a judgement call, and life isn't a hockey game where the "law" makes judgement calls.

Any cop with half a brain would pull over a driver and deal with the driver from the passenger side of the vehicle to avoid any dangerous situations. But then again finding cops who have brains is like finding a needle in a haystack.

This sounds like a cash grab.

I have to disagree with your position that a cop should deal with a pulled over car from the passenger side because that has the potential to put them in danger by giving a person who might have a gun a clear lane of fire at them. Cops approach from the driver side for a specific reason. Please notice that Wendy's post also says the ticket could be issued if the car not in the passing lane doesn't slow down. Any rational person who sees a cop dealing with a pulled over motorist slows down anyway .

I'll agree that it's warranted, but it has to be the most obviously and aptly named ticket in history. Seems like something straight out of the Springfield PD.

That law is imposed in parts of Canada. Offenders pay $250.

It's not a cash grab for one simple reason - the cop wont abandon the car he already pulled over, to chase after a new criminal. Although it's not enforceable, it will still make people think twice before flying by a cop on the side of the road. Who knows how many lives it will save.

I know that law is in effect here in Ontario. I think it is a good and sensible law. I know it came up shortly after an officer near Windsor was struck by a motorist while she had someone pulled over.

It may not be that enforcable, but it makes sense.

Of course it's a good law. Simple common sense. Anybody dumb enough to not get over when possible, and not slow down at all if they can't switch, should get definitely get a ticket.

It's hard to believe someone could possibly disagree with this, but such is life.

I only think it's ridiculous because we HAVE to make it law! It's common sense!

BTW, I also posted this on my Live Journal and I guess it's a law in many other states!
