What the hell does it have to do with being an R.N.??????? ( really, besides the chemistry of life, but this stuff just deals with elements and math) I am doing chem homework on my spring break to keep caught up and it is making me wonder:

Anyone else taking (or took) classes that seemingly have NOTHING to do with your major?

I'm a journalism major...
And I mean they make us take an onslaught of liberal arts and stuff. The most useless was probably an introduction to psych course, but, i mean if they are going to give us a degree, they gotta add some filler courses i suppose.

Picked up a degree in Journalism and finishing one now in Political Science, and never once, not one single damn time... did I get to play dodge ball or climb a rope or akwardly shower with other men.

I WISH they made me take more classes outside my program. History and Lit are fun, but ya can't get a Bachelor Of anything without B.O.

Bring back gym!

Seriously though, I think schools (Canadian schools anyway) focus too much on specialization. If you look back at the great thinkers and philosphers, and even the dominant figures of the 60's (King, Kennedy, Trudeau) they all had broad educational backgrounds and knowledge of biology, physics, the classics and stuff I gladly left behind in high school.


I think a broader education, even if it sucks now, will help you down the line. It certainly develops and trains the brain in ways things you enjoy never can.

I think you'll benefit from it... although your spring break certainly will not.

oh yeah, take computer science and you'll find out what specialization means... HA! I'm in 4th year and there are just as many non-computer classes than computer ones that are part of my major requirements. What programmer in their right mind wants to take 3 courses to learn about abstract mathematics?

I am an English Education major and have to take *4* natural science courses to fulfill the liberal arts segment of my English BA. I find 4 to be a little bit excessive...and frustrating...and pointless. Not many conversations revolve around Geology. *sigh*

I'm working on a Political Science degree - which is 15 credits. Only 7 of those are in Poli Sci. I have taken some history courses, philosophy courses, math courses, and an astronomy course to fill in the blanks. Plenty of unrelated material, but the philosophy has been very helpful. :thumb:

For me the general education classes really were a waste of time. I was doing 40+ hrs of homework a week with my classes that were relevant to my degree and ususally skipped these classes and still got a B or higher. The only value was that they helped my GPA when I was taking Fluid dynamics II and Heat Transfer

I don't know how you do it. In most of my classes, a good 60% of people never, and I mean NEVER, show up for class after the first day. They just drop off assignments and show up for exams. It baffles me... what's the secret?

My BA - which I got back in the early 90s (DAMN I'M OLD) was in Business Admin or something smarmy like that. Anyway, without a doubt my favourite class was "Sport in Antiquity". It qualified as a full arts credit, which we needed to graduate. Yes, I took a course that involved watching Ben Hur and Spartacus. It was way more interesting than any friggin accounting course I took.

Amen to that! I'm an International Relations major and we have to take 6 credits in Fine Arts towards my B.A. and I took two music courses that explored the history of the blues and jazz, which meant that I had to go to a blues concert and write a review for class. Definitely one of my favorite courses. :thumb: Way more interesting than my Statistics of Political Analysis course :roll:
