Gordon Downie: Canada's Bob Dylan? -
MilosG - 01-28-2003
Just occurred to me as I've been grooving on Dylan for a while and back to grooving with TheHip. Which lyrics do you prefer, Downie or Dylan? Have to admit, Downie's are easily as poetic, lyrical and mean A LOT MORE to me than any of Dylan's ever did.
Is he as important as Dylan was/is?
What do you think?
What is your favourite Downie line?

I personally like Downie's lyrics ALOT better, but I have never been a big Dylan fan.
As far as specific lines, there are so many I love

I absolutely love the rant in 100th Meridian. What is a 'garbage bag tree' anyway???

I think someone like Gordon Lightfoot would be more like Canada's Bob Dylan, wouldn't he?
By the way, a garbage bag tree, is simply a garbage bag that gets stuck on a tree branch.

I like GD because I can hear what he is saying most of the time

You have to answer this within the context of where the craft of lyric writing was when Dylan hit the scene, and where it was when Gord hit the scene. Once that is understood, regardless of whose lyrics you prefer, there is no way that Gord is even in the same league as Dylan in terms of importance. That's no slight at all either, because I'm not sure you could name ANYONE that was as important as Bob Dylan in the lyric writing department.

Bob Dylan is Canada's Bob Dylan.
Gord's lyrics recently have got too intricate at the expense of melody/emotion.

I like Gord's lyrics better, but if you would ask 100 people if they know Bob Dylan, probably 99 of them would say yes. I'm afraid the number who knows Gord wouldn't get close to that.....

We've forgotten about Canada's other musical genius: Neil Young. Not sure if he's poetic as Downie and Dylan are, but he's still making music and still ranks high in terms of importance as well.

Neil Young is amazing, although his last album was an absolute disgrace. The Weld live double album is some of the best live music ever.

downie is not anywhere close to as important as dylan...dont get me wrong, the hip is my favourite band by far, but dylan changed music...he created folk rock...one of his songs freed an innocent man, Ruben Carter...approx. 40 years after he really became big he is still creating great music...time will tell i guess...as for canada's dylan there are to many to pick one...downie, lightfoot, young, cockburn, ron sexsmith[/quote]

Seen 'em all a time or two.
Bob Dylan with his western band...peddle steel and a violin...oh man..to hear him sing "lay lady lay'...damm!!!
Or to see Neil with Crazy Horse...you can't beat that shit with a stick.
To be 10 meters from Gordo puttin' down....
But where you are when you are there....I'll take a thursday night in the Soulard with the hottest female blues singer in St. Louis (Kari Liston...remember that name) any day.
Because in the end...you need a connection to the band.
I got mine.
But I see Grodo or Neil or Bob from a distance.
And I can dance with Keri...I can talk to her about her new song lyrics...I can....well..
So how well do you know Bob, Neil or Gordon?
I seen 'em all...from a distance.
Rather dance with the singer than sit in a seat.
Your all welcome to join me in the soulard along side the big muddy any night of the week.

Jesus, thats gotta be the toughest one. HHHMM I would say one of the most interesting lyrics has to be from his Coke Machine Glow album I would say from Chancellor "Crazy daisys and wooden stars the threat of oxygen on mars" What is Gordie trying to tell us w/ this one. Just found it pretty intreiging.

Wow, what didn't you like about 'Are You Passionate' ?? I think it has alot of the same sound as Silver and Gold but a bigger message about living life...after 9/11. I don't know, I just love how melodic and cool it is. Was it the music you didn't like or the lyrics or both??? Just curious.

the music on 'AYP' is awesome. it's great funky soul-blues. i love the riffs at the beginning of each song, but because of the hallmark card-sentiment lyrics the album is virtually unlistenable.
i love 'healer' and 'goin' home' because they've got great music AND lyrics that required more thought than the card you'd find in a bouquet of flowers....but some songs' lyrics, especially the first one, are absolutely a waste of his talent.

"Let's Roll" is one of the most offensive songs ever written. The lyrics are so unbelieveably awful.
The music on AYP is mainly unremarkable stax blues by numbers that anyone with a record collection could knock off.
Silver and Gold was a good record about getting old. AYP is not.
"Goin' Home" is alright.
He needs to make a rock n roll record with Crazy Horse.
And release Time Fades Away/On the Beach etc on CD.
I am listening to After the Gold Rush a lot at the moment.
