Indie Awards - Dr. J - 03-06-2005

Help me out. Came across the list of winners for the "Indie Awards" presented during Canadian Music Week http://www.cmw.net/indies.htm They included Thornley, The Trews, Sum41, Randy Bachman, Metric etc. These artists certainly deserve recognition, but what exactly are they independent of? Most, if not all of them, have a management firm, an entertainment lawyer, a promotion team, a distribution deal and a record label. To say they are "indie" because they are not signed to a major label is simply semantics since most so-called independent labels in Canada are now connected to or controlled by a major.

The list for this year's indies nominees is up. An interesting list which includes Plaskett's Three. Awards on March 13th.
